Albert Pujols - The clear choice

There are only two more awards to be awarded before the books on the 2009 MLB season can be officially closed – one of which is the National League Most Valuable Player. Last year’s winner, Albert Pujols of the St. Louis Cardinals, looks poised to repeat. If he wins, it will be his third NL MVP nod, as he also took home the hardware in 2005 after knocking off Barry Bonds and his four consecutive titles. What makes him the most obvious choice is that he greatly improved on many of his totals from last season.

NL Cy Young Award winner - Tim Lincecum

Tim’s done it again. Tim Lincecum of the San Francisco Giants won his second consecutive National League Cy Young Award. Lincecum edged out the pair of St. Louis Cardinals aces, Adam Wainwright and Chris Carpenter. He becomes the first pitcher to repeat as the winner since Randy Johnson did so with the Diamondbacks four times from 1999-2002. It makes sense that the number one pitcher of 2008 won again, as while Lincecum’s wins total was down in 2009, he improved in almost every other area.

The 2009 MLB Playoffs Exposed

With the Minnesota Twins and Detroit Tigers extra-inning division game nail-biter in the books, we now know the eight playoff teams. With that, here’s a Gear Live exclusive detailing exactly what is going to happen in each respective league in the 2009 MLB playoffs. Some may shock you, but it’s all true, so pay attention.
In the National League, the St. Louis Cardinals and their best three-man rotation in baseball, led of course by Chris Carpenter and his near-unanimous “Comeback Player of the Year” award; will make short work of the Los Angeles Dodgers lineup. The St. Louis starters will each flirt with perfection, but L.A. will manage to score three measly runs in the three game series; one per game. Each run will be come via a solo blast by Manny Ramirez, still trying to show the baseball world that he can ruin anything special that baseball has to offer. The other series will be much the same, with the Philadelphia Phillies starting Cliff Lee in three games against the Colorado Rockies, just to see if he can finally prove that he actually is better than Roy Halladay. He’ll win two, but it will take a group effort for Philadelphia to clinch the divisional series.

Joel Pineiro gets it done

Here’s a fact you probably don’t know: Joel Pineiro is the third-best pitcher in baseball. Sitting behind dual-aces Adam Wainwright and Chris Carpenter on the St. Louis Cardinals’ starting pitcher depth chart, Pineiro has racked up a career year, worthy of top spot in the rotation on many other teams throughout baseball.
To this point in the season, Pineiro has a 15-11 record with a 3.24 ERA over an amazing 203 innings pitched. The only disappointing thing for those numbers is how they stack up against Wainwright and Carpenter, who each have more wins with a lower ERA. Now while his numbers do make him look like one of the best the National League has to offer, the journey for Pineiro hasn’t been easy.

Albert Pujols Dings #40

He did it again. Albert Pujols smacked his 40th home run on Sunday, marking the fifth time in his already storied career that he’s reached the plateau. With the bases empty in the fourth, he drove a 1-1 fastball from San Diego’s Edward Mujica over the right field wall to become just the 20th player in MLB history to reach 40 home runs in a season five times. What makes this year even more special for Pujols is that this is the earliest he has reached 40. The fastest prior to this year was when he hit his 40th on August 29th in 2004.

Back in the National League for Matt Holliday

The St. Louis Cardinals added some more pop to their lineup last week, trading with the Oakland Athletics to get Matt Holliday into the fold. The slugging corner outfielder made his impact immediately with his new club and his new fans.
Holliday’s weekend was anything but a vacation. After hearing about the trade to the Cardinals, Matt and his family hopped on a train from New York (where the Athletics were playing against the Yankees) to Philadelphia (where the Cardinals were playing the Phillies), opting to avoid the interstate traffic. Holliday didn’t miss a beat – or a game – as he returned to the National League in grand fashion on July 24. The only thing that was out of place was his equipment. He had to borrow a glove and shoes while his stuff was still being brought in from New York.
Holliday went 7-for-11 in the series, including four doubles and three RBI. Let’s take a look at some of the other numbers. He’s batting .636 and is slugging 1.000. Needless to say, he’s leading his team in both categories. Even without having played in the National League before Friday, he certainly has made himself a contender for NL Player of the Week.
This guy is amazing. Okay, three games is a small sample size, but this is the same guy that a lot of people said would be nothing outside of Colorado. Granted, his time in Oakland this season wasn’t spectacular, but he was still on pace to have a very good season. Now that he’s back in the Senior Circuit, he looks like he’s ready to explode; and who wouldn’t be? Going from worst-place Oakland to first-place St. Louis would certainly put a pop in anyone’s bat, although Holliday’s terrific debut still wasn’t enough to help the Cards from dropping the series and falling a half-game back of the Chicago Cubs in the NL Central.
But seriously, surrounded by players like Albert Pujols and Ryan Ludwick, it’s only a matter of time before the Cardinals surge up the wins column and make their way into October. Let’s face it; one Holliday is enough for St. Louis. They won’t need any more until after the World Series.
Cardinals Defeat Padres Thanks To Aaron Miles Grand Slam

In the bottom of the ninth inning, Aaron Miles played unlikely hero as he hit a walk-off grand slam to help his St. Louis Cardinals defeat the San Diego Padres.
“That’s a feeling I wasn’t sure I was going to get to experience, that walk-off homer,” Miles said. “I’ve never done it before, not in the minor leagues or on any field. That’s a great feeling.”

Detroit Tigers On The Move To The World Series

After starting off the regular season strong, the Detroit Tigers lost the wind from their sails in the last couple of months of the season, eventually losing the A.L. Central crown to the Minnesota Twins. But you know what they say about the postseason - it’s a new season all over again and no one has been better than the Detroit Tigers in this “second” season. And now, they’re on their way to the biggest series in baseball - The World Series.
