Bengie Molina couldn’t lose in this World Series. Sure, his Texas Rangers did roll over to allow the San Francisco Giants to win their first World Series since moving out of the Polo Grounds, but Molina’s allegiance to both teams during this season gave him the right to wear a World Series ring regardless of how the series played out. Molina started the season with the Giants, but was sent to the Rangers to make room for Buster Posey behind the plate.

With the Giants, Molina hit .257 with three home runs and 17 RBI in 61 games. His on-base percentage was at .312 and he slugged .332. After going to Texas, he hit .240 with two homers and 19 RBI in 57 games. His OBP was .279 and he slugged .320 on the American League side of the game. He also hit for the cycle on July 16 against the Red Sox. All in all, it was an impressive season for the 36-year-old catcher.

This ring is Molina’s second. He won his first with the Angels in 2002. Younger brothers Jose and Yadier have each experienced World Series victories. Jose won playing backup to Bengie and then assisted the Yankees in christening new Yankee Stadium in 2009 while Yadier’s ring came in 2006 with the Cardinals. Bengie is now adding a fifth ring to the brothers’ collection, putting them in very rare territory for family members in the annals of baseball history.

Molina become just the sixth player ever to play for both World Series teams in the same season. While he may have preferred to win with the Rangers; or at least extend the series beyond five games, he’s happy taking a ring for his first-half accomplishments with the Giants. He’ll now take his time to decide whether or not Monday night’s World Series clincher will be the last game he ever plays in MLB. As a career catcher, retiring at 36 is quite an accomplishment. Going out on top in any form will be well worth it.
