Brandon Phillips Homers in Reds Victory

Last night Brandon Phillips of the Cincinnati Reds hit a mammoth 2 run home run en route to an 8-7 victory over the Florida Marlins. The win gave the Reds an 18-23 record on the season, and downgraded the Marlins’ record to 23-15.

“It’s not over because anything can happen in this game,” Phillips said. “You never know when you’ll need some runs.”

The dominant Marlins jumped out to a very early lead, receiving solo home runs from Jeremy Hermida and Hanely Ramirez in the first inning. The score remained 2-0 until the top of the 4th inning, when second baseman Danny Uggla hit a solo job, making the score 3-0. However, after a 2 run 5th inning, the Reds took the lead in the 6th on the heels of an Adam Dunn sacrifice fly and a wild pitch from Burke Badenhop.

“Very frustrating,” Badenhop said. “You get in that situation, and you completely yank a fastball (into the dirt). Very disappointing.”

The Fish would knot it up in the 7th inning from a Mike Rabelo sacrifice fly. This would be no match for the Reds’ 7th inning however, as both Jeff Keppinger and Brandon Phillips would launch two 2 run home runs to put ahead the Reds for good.

After the game, starting pitcher Aaron Harang said that he trusts his offensive counterparts.

“I never lost faith,” Harang said. “I know we can score runs. It just seemed like a dry spell. We put it together one day and not the next, and they seemed to fall on my days. They kept coming around and saying, ‘Don’t worry. We’ll put some runs together. Just keep doing what you’re doing.”
