I’d Much Rather Have Donte Stallworth In The NFL Than Michael Vick

Donte Stallworth

Cleveland Browns WR Donte Stallworth was suspended indefinitely by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell pending a meeting between the commissioner and Stallworth’s representatives.  Stallworth pleaded guilty to a DUI manslaughter charge for killing Mario Reyes on March 14 after a night of drinking in Miami Beach, FL.  Stallworth has started serving a 30-day sentence in jail, which will be followed by two years of house arrest, provisions for which Stallworth will be allowed to play football, and then eight years of probation.

Considering the indefinite suspension leveled on former NFL superstar QB Michael Vick for dogfighting and killing dogs, Goodell had to come down harshly on Stallworth who actually took a human life, however, by accident.  Stallworth acted stupidly and he knew it and knows it now.  There has been nothing but remorse on Stallworth’s part, even agreeing quickly with the deceased’s family on financial compensation, although, all the money in the world cannot replace Mr. Reyes.  From the beginning, Stallworth has been cooperative with law enforcement.  On the other hand, Vick tried to keep his illegal doings on the down low and has shown remorse only insomuch as to be able to get back on the football field.

Yes, what Stallworth did was incredibly stupid, incredibly dumb, and incredibly irresponsible.  However, there was no maliciousness in his action (and I pray for Mr. Reyes’ family), however, you cannot say the same for Vick.  I’m hoping Goodell allows Stallworth to take the field a lot sooner than he does Vick because despite being a Vick fan before all of this dogfighting mess and still believing he has useful talent in the tank left, I wouldn’t miss having an NFL without Michael Vick.  It’s been just fine without him.  What the NFL needs are more Stallworths that take responsibility for their actions no matter how stupid they were.

I think Vick has paid his dues. He spent two years in prison and is still on house arrest. If Goodell reinstates him and a team is willing to pick him up then let him play. Vick enabled dog fighting yes, but Stallworth killed a person. Accidental it may have been, but he was drunk and shouldn’t have been driving in the first place. They both acted stupidly, and they both deserve whatever happens to them. If they are both lucky, then they will both still have an NFL career somewhere.

I agree. I live in SW Florida and I’ve read plenty on the Stallworth case in the Herald and my local papers. He was cooperative and apologetic from the moment the police arrived on the scene. He admitted he had been drinking over the night. He truthfully told them he had driven home from drinking, rested for a few hours, and was driving back to the beach. He immediately responded, when asked what happened, “I hit that man lying there.” Within days he personally reached out to the victims family. The victims family pushed for his plea deal. He never lied about anything and he is a first time offender. He has said that what happened will be with him for the rest of his life. Honesty and responsibility, regardless of the terrible mistake, goes a LONG way.

This is mornic. Stallworth got behind the wheel DRUNK AND KILLED A HUMAN BEING…A HUMAN. Not a dog, NOT DOGS, but a human.

I would much rather have Vick. He did not kill a human. I love dogs, but they are not humans. This is why we are in the situations we are in as a country. The law system and people are backwards.

Seriously? I forgot, how many people did Vick kill?

Getting in a car drunk is like randomly firing a gun into a crowd of people. If you miss, you were being “incredibly stupid, incredibly dumb, and incredibly irresponsible.” If you hit someone, you’re a murderer.

All the remorse in the world won’t bring back the guy he killed. He should have been thrown in prison for years, not days. He should never be allowed back in the NFL. Ever.

Vick should be less remorseful because what he did requires less remorse. He killed dogs, Stallworth killed a person. There’s a huge, HUGE difference. Unless you’re a card carrying member of PETA, I’d expect you’d agree that Man > Dog….

I knew this would be somewhat “controversial”. A human being is OF COURSE more important than a dog. I guess what gets missed in my piece is the character of Stallworth versus Vick. Stallworth didn’t act maliciously - in fact, it was his first offense and admitted everything to the police and was cooperative in every way. He reached out to the… Read More family who actually helped him with his plea deal.

Vick on the other hand had been cruel to animals (and believe me, I’m not an animal lover myself; not that I would ever kill or torture them) for years and tried to keep the whole thing on the hush and wasn’t cooperative with the cops or the NFL until he got caught with hard proof.

The result of Stallworth’s crime is of course worse than Vick’s, but there was no intention there, just stupidity. Vick had both.

Dude you are out of touch. What you are saying is not controversial. It’s idiotic.

Stallworth’s crime is BY FAR WORST. He could have KILLED MORE PEOPLE, he was drunk. Get got behind the while of a car DRUNK. Then Killed a man…then got 30 freaking days (now 24).

THAT RIGHT THERE IS A JOKE. People like you accept this B.S. Mean while Vick gets nearly 2 years, pays 1 million dollars to take care of *HIS* dogs that were going to be put to death…and is treated like a monster, while people like you make excuses for Stallworth? BS. I’m sick of it.

Dogs are not human. They are fought around the world, eaten…and we look like a joke because people care more about Dogs then humans. Nothing Vick did put any HUMAN BEING in harms way.

You have Leonard Little…NOTHING, you have Dany Heatley of the ATL Thashers who killed his teammates…NOTHING…now you have D. Stallworth and folks trying to down play him getting drunk and taking a life.

Please. I’m sorry for being harsh, but this is really stupid. There is no way this makes sense.

Humans > Dogs….you see we don’t put Humans to sleep, but we put thousands dogs to sleep every day.

There was no intention? WTF; when you drive drunk you TOTALLY DISREGARD LIFE. When you drive drunk, you are being irresponsible…he is rich and could have paid someone to drive him…but he did not care…it did not matter…he put in danger every person driving on that road…So yes there was intention. He drove drunk period.  He intented to do so when he went out and got drunk…he KNEW he was going out, he KNEW he was going to drank and yet he did not get a designated driver?

So yeah, there *was* intention….to disregard life and safety of other human beings when he chose to put the key in the ignition and drive his car.

It’s not about dogs vs. humans. It’s about character and humanity. Stallworth showed both. Vick showed neither. Stallworth manned up and took responsibility for his stupidity. Vick never has. He lied until he he had no choice.

Killing a person accidentally is truly terrible. But fighting, electrocuting, and hanging a living being, dog or human, is heinous. It shows a truly sick person with no moral compass. First offense DUI is stupidity, pure and simple. You can learn from stupid, but you can’t buy a moral compass.
