The New York Islanders shut down goalie Rick DiPietro for the season, and the results already show that he’ll be missed. Journeyman goalie Joey MacDonald made his first start of the year giving up 4 goals of 26 attempted shots. The goals for the Flyers were scored by Daniel Briere, Scott Hartnell, Braydon Coburn and Vaclav Prospal. Philadelphia goalie Martin Biron only allowed one goal on the night of 33 attempted Islander shots.

“You want to stand there and keep it going,” said Biron, smiling. “It’s like, bring on more shots to give them more to cheer about.”

Islanders coach Teddy Nolan was frustrated following the game, at his team’s inconsistency. Coming off of a 3-1 victory against the New Jersey Devils, a game in which rookie Kyle Okposo scored his first NHL goal, the Isles were in trouble both against goalie Marty Biron and in the penalty box. The Islanders had 5 penalties throughout the game.

“It’s tough to watch sometimes,” Nolan said. “We just need to get back and evaluate it and see who’s stepping up and who’s competing and who’s not.”

Flyers coach John Stevens had nothing but good things to say about his goalie Biron following the game.

“I’m excited for Marty that he is gaining confidence as we move along,” said Stevens. “We’ve said all along if you are going to win this time of year, you need really good goaltending and Marty seems like he’s getting more confidence as we move along.”
