St. Louis Cardinals relief pitcher Josh Hancock was killed early Sunday morning in a traffic accident. He was just 29 years old.

Sunday night’s scheduled game between the Cardinals and the Chicago Cubs has been postponed. Hancock last worked in a game on the 28th vs. the Cubs, pitching three innings.

According to witnesses of the accident Hancock’s vehicle hit a tow truck at approximately 12:30 a.m. CT and the pitcher died at the scene. He was reportedley a very well liked player in the Cardinals’ clubhouse, being described as a fun loving easy going person.

Hancock was a key cog in the Red Bird’s bullpen. In his first full season as a Cardinal in 2006 he threw 77 innings in relief, the very same year in which he was cut in spring training for the Cincinatti Reds. Throughout the course of Hancock’s career he pitched for four different teams (Boston Red Sox, Philadelphia Phillies, Cincinnati Reds, and the St. Louis Cardinals). He has a career record of nine wins and seven losses. He struck out 110 batters over the course of his career.
