On Tuesday night, young Detroit Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander threw a no-hitter against the Milwaukee Brewers. It’s the third ever no-hitter in interleague games, and the first Tigers no-hitter since 1984. His fastball was clocked at upwards of 100 MPH, and Verlander had great break on his curveball. He had to have his “A” stuff facing a Brewers lineup featuring J.J. Hardy, Prince Fielder, and Geoff Jenkins (who struck out in all three at-bats).  Hardy made the last out of the game flying out to Magglio Ordonez.

Not even the pressure of a possible no hitter distracted Verlander in his performance tonight.

“About the fifth or sixth you can’t help but think about it a little,” Verlander said. “Everyone kept giving me high-fives and nobody came and sat next to me.”

On the heels of Curt Schilling coming within one batter of pitching a no-hitter against the Oakland Athletics, Verlander actually throws a no-no, which is good for baseball.  In a season with such good pitching the focus on the league is rightfully being shifted to the hurlers. Verlander is a fantastic young pitcher with a 3.12 ERA and 56 strikeouts thus far this season.

Brandon Inge helped the Tigers win with a deep home run in the bottom of the third inning. Curtis Granderson contributed to his incredible amount of triples (13) with a three-bagger in the sixth inning scoring Inge.

These two teams will tango again tommorrow with two lefties squaring off - Chris Capuano and Mike Maroth.
