Kyle Davies doesn’t give up Alex Rodriguez’s 600th home run

Kyle DaviesKyle Davies had to be feeling a little extra pressure on Saturday afternoon. Not only was he just pitching against the New York Yankees, but Alex Rodriguez was among those he would face. Going into the game, Rodriguez was at a well-publicized 599 career home runs and looking for elusive number 600. What must have made things a little worse for Davies was the fact that he was the man off whom Rodriguez blasted homer number 500.

Davies gave up three home runs in the game, but none to A-Rod, as Davies avoided becoming a double-milestone victim. In fact, the guy Rodriguez was “protecting” in the lineup, Mark Teixeira, had two big flies off of Davies. Posada added another one in the fourth inning. Rodriguez did get a hit off of Davies in the game, but it was a measly single to third. Davies got the hook in the sixth inning after throwing just 84 pitches.

Rodriguez’s quest for 600 continues. He already has the honor of being the youngest MLB player to reach the 300, 400 and 500 home run milestones and can (and likely will) add 600 to that list soon enough, but it wasn’t meant to be on Saturday afternoon. Rodriguez is already seventh on the all-time list of home run leaders and as likely as he’ll hit 600 is that he’ll pass Sammy Sosa’s 609 by season’s end. At 34 years old, Rodriguez may pass Barry Bonds’ 762 before he calls it a career as well.

As for Davies, his incredible average season – and career – continued. He got credit for the win, which must have been nice, as his record improved to 5-6, but his ERA went from 5.45 to 5.52, exactly where his career ERA sits. He’s just your typical, run-of-the-mill starting pitcher. By the end of his time in baseball, he’ll still only be remembered as the guy who gave up A-Rod’s 500th home run; if he’s remembered at all.
