Carlos Beltran hit his 11th home run of the year, and Mike Pelfrey pitched 5 2/3 innings of 1 run baseball to hand the Mets their 37th victory of the season, putting them at an even .500. After the game, Mets manager Jerry Manuel was asked if the team was going in the right direction.

“We still have to prove we can be consistent and we still have to show we can be good at home,” Manuel said. “The jury is out. We have three big games with Seattle and then the Yankees. I would like to see us more consistent offensively before I make that statement.”

In the first inning, Jose Reyes would triple to start off the game. David Wright would bloop a single to shortstop, allowing Reyes to score the game’s first run. Neither team would score until the 3rd, when Carlos Beltran hit a 2 run bomb to the second deck of Coors Field, putting the Mets up 3-0. Former Stanford Cardinal Greg Reynolds acknowledged the pitch’s poor placement.

“It was supposed to be in, but it was over the middle and up and he made me pay for it,” Reynolds said of the fastball to Beltran.

Mike Pelfrey didn’t allow a run before being pulled from the game, but he’d already thrown 98 pitches in the 6th inning. Pelfrey would walk 5 on the afternoon, allowing only 3 hits and striking out 5. After the game, Jerry Manuel explained his decision to take out Pelfrey.

“When a guy is fatigued, the ball is either down in the strike zone or up out of the strike zone,” Manuel said. “That is where he was.”

There’s no doubt that Pelfrey earned his 4th victory of the year. After the game, Rockies manager Clint Hurdle lauded Mike for his effort.

“Pelfrey was real difficult to hit today,” Hurdle said. “He had late, violent action we didn’t see last time we faced him.”
