It took 22 innings, but last night the Colorado Rockies were able to put away the San Diego Padres for a 2-1 victory. The winning run was scored by Willy Taveras, after Troy Tulowitzki hit an RBI double.

“It’s tough to keep your head into it and put together good at-bats and be into every pitch,” Tulowitzki said after the game. “We were talking about how our legs were hurting out there. It’s tough to stand on your feet for 22 innings and keep moving.”

The very first scoring of the game occured after 14 innings, when Rockies right fielder Brad Hawpe walked with the bases loaded, to score Taveras. The lead wouldn’t last long though, as in the bottom half of the frame Padres catcher Josh Bard would single to center field, scoring Kevin Kouzmanoff. Eight innings would go by before Tulowitzki’s double would end the game.

“What a game, man,” Hawpe said. “I don’t know. It was like a boxing match.”

The pitching for each side was solid during this game. For the Padres, Jake Peavy went 8 innings, striking out 11 without allowing a run. Jeff Francis got the nod for the Rockies, he went 7 innings and struck out 7 batters. The first pitcher in the game to allow a run was PAdres reliever Kevin Cameron. Both teams had their long men in full effect; Kip Wells of the Rockies pitched 4 innings out of the bullpen without allowing a run, and Glendon Rusch for the Padres threw 3 innings out of the pen.

“When you watch that many guys go into the game, you end up getting heckled by every last fan over why you’re still not in the game,” Wells said. “But it’s good to be there when it’s over and you’re coming out on top.”
