Rollins Eats Words In Mets Home Opener
The 56,227 fans in attendance Monday at the New York Mets home opener feasted on Jimmy Rollins for his comment that the Philadelphia Phillies were the “team to beat.” Despite such strong words Rollins went 0-3 in four at-bats, and committed a crucial error in the eighth inning to keep the bases loaded with just one out. Loud chants of “Jimmy Rollins!” and heavy booing were frequent whether he was at the plate or in the field. A seven run eighth inning would lead to a decisive 11-5 Mets victory.
If one is going to make such heavy comments about their team, they need to be able to back it up at gametime. Rollins needed to come with it on Monday to avoid the wrath of the Mets fans - he was easily an enemy to Mets fans today because of his comment. If he’s going to keep his word that the Phillies will be the team to beat, he’ll need to do better in future games than go 0-3 with an error against the reigning National League East champions.
David Wright is quietly carrying a 19-game hitting streak, which he kept alive with an eighth inning double today. There weren’t any Met homeruns while both Chase Utley and Ryan Howard homered today for the Phils. John Maine was 1/3 of an inning away from a decision, but six walks kept him from picking up the win. Cole Hamels went six innings with three walks and seven strikeouts. The Mets play the Phillies again on Wednesday, April 11th when Oliver Perez takes on Adam Eaton.
