Scott Boras to represent Rafael Soriano

Rafael SorianoScott Boras has signed another one. He inked Rays closer Rafael Soriano to a deal and will represent him as his contract with Tampa Bay comes to a close and he begins to search for a new; and significantly higher-paying deal. As one of the top closers in baseball this year, holding his own with the likes of Mariano Rivera, Jonathan Papelbon and Heath Bell, Soriano will demand top dollars from whatever team he winds up with.

Soriano joins the likes of Stephen Strasburg, Mark Teixeira, Carlos Pena, Kevin Millwood, Prince Fielder and Manny Ramirez under the wings of Boras. If MLB put together a charity tournament featuring teams lead by their agents, would anybody bet against Team Boras?

The chances of Soriano staying with the Rays are slim. Although Tampa Bay would love to keep a 40+ saves closer, they probably won’t be able to pay Soriano the same as many other teams around the league can. They’ll lose Soriano as well as others like Carl Crawford and Pena. They’ll have to hope that if he turns down arbitration and signs with another team, they can turn his vacancy into two additional draft picks, and everybody knows how well Tampa Bay has done in the draft in recent years.

Soriano leads the American League in saves and at just 30 years of age, he’s in the prime of his career. His 1.76 ERA and 8.2 K/9 are among the top in his class and looks like he’ll take his act on the road. If he signs with the Rays again, there’s nothing stopping them from trading him for an immediate return, and it’s likely that Soriano will want to be in better control of his future and the team that he plays with. It was a good run, but it’s not over yet.
