Tiger Bats Come Alive in Rout of Indians

The Detroit Tigers seemingly woke up last night, in a 13-2 victory over the Cleveland Indians. The man taking the injured Dontrelle Willis’ spot in the rotation, Armando Gallaraga, went 6.2 innings allowing 2 runs on just 1 hit, with 6 punch-outs.
“I was a little bit nervous, but when I gave up the home run, I had to get going,” Galarraga said. “The runs made me feel more relaxed.”
The pitcher who took the shellacking in this game was Cy Young award winner C.C Sabathia. He was brutal, going just 4 innings, allowing 9 runs (all of which earned) on 8 hits. He didn’t help himself out either, he gave out 5 walks to the Tigers.
“I’m always my worst critic,” said the 0-3 Sabathia. “It’s frustrating that I’ve pitched four games and not even given my team a chance in any of them. That’s unacceptable.”
Responsible for most of the Tigers’ runs in this one were Edgar Renteria and Migeul Cabrera. Cabrera hit a 2 run home run in the 2nd inning, it was his third of the season. 4 of Renteria’s 5 RBI’s came on one swing of the bat, when he hit a grand slam in the 5th inning off the struggling Sabathia.
“C.C. is tough to hit,” said Renteria. “He’s one of the greatest pitchers in baseball. He had a bad night. We got lucky.”
After the game, Sabathia acknowledged his frustration at his early season struggles.
“Usually, it’s something mechanical or in my delivery,” Sabathia said. “But it’s not [this time]. I look at the video, and I haven’t been [establishing] the inside part of the plate to right-handed hitters. I have no feel for my cutter. Last year, I did a good job commanding both sides of the plate, and this year I haven’t done that.”
