True Predictions: Vikings, Jets, Ravens, and Sea Monsters

Brett Favre

I went 4-2 this past weekend and 7-4 for the season. The Atlanta Falcons cannot make a statement and lose to the New England Patriots. You tell me if the San Francisco 49ers last second loss to Brett Favre and Minnesota Vikings equals “ugly” as I predicted. I think it counts more as “heart-breaking.” While it was a magical NFL moment to see Favre hoist that ball and to see Greg Lewis snatch it, I am of the mind that Favre will break down at some point during the season. I will either be right on this call or we may be seeing a John-Elway-like end to his career.

I guess I have to keep saying it: the New York Jets have arrived early, but now what, Tennessee Titans? Vince Young to the rescue? Yikes!  Indianapolis Colts, Denver Broncos and Dallas Cowboys all won, as expected.

I keep looking for a young team (read: young QB) to make a statement against a quality opponent. Very young Mark Sanchez (and the Jets’ formidable defense) will beat the New Orleans Saints (3-0) in New Orleans this weekend.

More young QB talk: Matt Ryan did not beat the Pats last weekend. Can Joe Flacco do it this weekend? Is Tom Brady back in his groove? Is the Pats’ defense still porous? At some point the Baltimore Ravens have to get over the hump or they just aren’t going to make it to the next level. That inspiration will be enough for victory.

The Cowboys go up-and-down. The Broncos aren’t as good as their record looks. The game is in Denver. Home team takes this one. It will be the same thing for the Pittsburgh Steelers as they will right the ship and take care of the traveling San Diego Chargers.

Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers will be trying way too hard in a hostile environment. The Vikings have Adrian Peterson. So, unless there is a massive hangover following last week’s crazy win, the Vikings will come up on top this Monday night over the Packers. Don’t worry, the Packers will return the favor on their home turf later in the season.

Quick notes: The luminescent green uniforms worn by the Seattle Seahawks last week were their homage to that great Saturday morning kiddies show “Sigmund and the Sea Monsters”... The worst football-inspired commercial so far involves Troy Polamalu selling shampoo. I know he has the hair, but he’s never been a rip-roaring, over-the-top guy, right? Was it the Madden video game curse that affected him early this season or was it this fiasco… Michael Strahan cannot get me to buy submarine sandwiches nor get me to watch his sitcom. He’s at the opposite pole of Polamalu. Strahan overacts… Not gridiron related, although he did play a football player in 1991’s Necessary Roughness, but Evander Holyfield playing himself and his mother in the Taco Bell ads makes me believe he definitely has taken too many shots to the head. No helmets in that sport.
