Warriors Make History, Defeat Number One Seed Mavericks

Baron Davis after a threeAvery Johnson said all the pressure was on the Warriors. With a game 7 in Dallas looming, there was most assuredly plenty of pressure to be had. But you wouldn’t have known that from watching the Warriors on Thursday night. In their second straight game with a chance to eliminate the Mavs, the Warriors took care of business in the second half and finished off Mark Cuban’s club, 111-86, taking the series in six games.

It’s already been herald as the biggest upset in NBA playoff history. The Warriors were not given a chance in this series by anyone – but that didn’t stop them from becoming only the third eight-seed team to ever eliminate a number one seed in the playoffs, and the first team to accomplish this since the first round turned to a seven game series in 2002.

The Mavericks, who had 67 wins – tied for the 6th highest win total in NBA history – were outplayed in ever facet of the game. A quick glance at the box score will reveal three glaring facts: the Mavs were outrebounded 53-38, shot 37.6% from the field and MVP favorite Dirk Nowitzki had arguably the worst game of his career. Shooting 2-13, including 0-6 from three-point range, Dirk scored only 8 points.

Golden State, on the other hand, had no trouble scoring. All five starters were in double digits, with Baron Davis (playing through an injury suffered early in the game) and Stephen Jackson combining for 53 points.

This marks the first playoff series win for the Warriors since 1991.
