Washington Nationals Acquire Wily Mo Pena

Wily Mo Pena
Since the age of sixteen, the year he was signed, Wily Mo Pena has been looking for an organization that he could call home, and Boston will be added to the list of his former teams. On Friday the Boston Red Sox traded the struggling Pena to the Washington Nationals for a player to be named later. Still just 25 years old, Pena was hitting .218 with five home runs and 18 RBI’s for the Bosox. Washington general manager Jim Bowden had this to say on the move:

“We don’t score a lot of runs. We don’t have a lot of depth at the higher levels right now, and he’s 25 years old with power. It was an opportunity we couldn’t turn down. Certainly sometimes acquisitions can motivate other players to step up their game.”

This was a very good move for the Nats. They have to let their younger players play, and Pena can still develop into an above average Major League Baseball hitter. In the cavernous RFK Stadium home runs come few and far between. Pena’s one tool is raw power. It’d be safe to say that he’ll give that stadium’s fences a run for their money.

Wily can be expected to be suited up for Washington tommorow when they square off against the New York Mets.
