Hoosiers coach Terry Hoeppner dies due to tumor

Normally I’ll make jokes and poke fun at what’s going on, but a few stories deserve to be handled with respect and dignity, and this is one of those.
Earlier today, Indiana football coach Terry Hoeppner died due to complications from a brain tumor. He was 59. Coach Hoeppner didn’t have a stellar career at Indiana (9-14), and since he was hired in 2004 as the new coach for the Hoosiers after a successful six years as the head coach at Miami (Ohio) (57-39), many fans were upset at what appeared to be a true lack of progress for the program. Over the past 18 months, however, Coach Hoeppner had begun treatment to battle a tumor found in his brain.

Who Should the Houston Texans Choose? Who Else? Reggie Bush

I have the task of convincing you that the Houston Texans don’t need to rack their brains over the decision, the choice is clear; go with your first instinct - Reggie Bush. All this talk about Reggie Bush not being an every-down back, he’s not durable…baloney. In this day and age of the NFL, it’s a copy cat league in which successful teams now employ multiple back sets. Sure the Texans already have Domanick Davis, but they’re going to need another weapon. Look at the New England Patriots, a backfield by committee, the Denver Broncos using multiple backs, the Pittsburgh Steelers surely needed both Jerome Bettis and Willie Parker. If they pass on Bush, the Texans will surely regret their decision. Bush is the most promising running back prospect since Gale Sayers and Barry Sanders. Don’t get me started on being a “smaller” back, did that effect Barry Sanders? Tiki Barber? Warrick Dunn? I didn’t think so.
If your team is going to invest in a number one draft pick, he should be a franchise player. Bush not only is an exceptional player, but he has absolutely none of the off-field issues you are going to worry about with every other prospect in this draft. Mario Williams, his weakness is that he has a questionable work ethic and needs to be motivated. Do you want ride your #1 draft choice to play hard? Come on, this is the pros; teams should demand more of the #1 pick. Matt Leinert, maybe he’s not focused entirely on football and more on becoming a celebrity. Vince Young? This guy could end up being a bust altogether and he might not be able to even grasp the simplest of NFL offenses. Reggie Bush he already has the maturity as you can see from the way he has handled himself throughout the so-called “Agent for house scandal”. All the interviews Bush has been apart of the last few days, on MTV TRL, on Conan O’Brien, this guy is ready for the big stage and will not disappoint.
Whoa nellie! The 77 year old broadcaster has called it quits from play by play duties for college football. As it turns out Keith Jackson’s last game was the 2006 Rose bowl between USC and Texas. Jackson was the most famous voice of college football, and will be missed. Jackson is also the voice of the famous Gatorade commercials in which scientist at the University of Florida developed a special formula to help the football team overcome dehydration.

Professional Athletes are Just Born with Talent: Plain and Simple

After watching the Detroit Pistons versus Miami Heat match-up last night, I learned an interesting fact about PG Chauncey Billups. He is actually related to potential first round draft pick running back Lendale White from USC. That is some scary talent in their family’s gene pool. The most potent family duo has to be Vince Carter and Tracy McGrady; they must have just destroyed their friends and kids in the park when they were youngsters. After watching the NCAA tournament and seeing a number of impact players being second generation stars, such as Joakim Noah be the best player in the tournament, his dad is ex-tennis star Yannick Noah. Joakim’s Florida teammate, Taurean Green is also a second generation basketball player, his dad is ex-NBA player Sidney Green. For all you aspiring ball players, if you find yourself falling short on the playground, I feel for you - maybe you just weren’t born with it.
After reading the newest edition of the Sporting News, they published a mock-draft article. They mentioned Young’s poor decision to participate in a college QB all-star challenge, where he was not very impressive. My personal opinion is that Young’s showing should not diminish his stock; sometimes teams put too much emphasis on combines, 40 yard dash times, and silly obstacle course tests, but not of actual game footage. Let’s not forgot how impressive he has been throughout his career at Texas as a whole.
Sporting News had Young falling all the way down to the 10th spot, in the Arizona Cardinals lap. This would definitely make Coach Dennis Green happy. This mock draft didn’t even have Young as the first Texas Longhorn picked; they had S Michael Huff going ninth to the Detroit Lions. Well that throws the logic of some people’s thinking right out the door. Conversely, the Sporting News likes to publish some of e-mails fans send, and one Vince Young fan points out “If you want to win games, pick Reggie Bush in the NFL draft. If you want to win championships, pick Vince Young. Use your own judgment and common sense on draft day, and hope your team’s GM makes the right decision.
Detroit Lions Make Coaching Changes

Forget all the talk about Super Bowl XL being in Detroit, let’s talk about the hometown team - the Detroit Lions. I know you Detroit fans hate Matt Millen with a passion, so I hope to give you some optimism for next year. Firstly, there has been a coaching change, even though some fans may say ex-coach Steve Mariucci wasn’t really the problem. The new head coach coming in is a relative unknown. He is Rod Marinelli, a former Tampa Bay defensive line coach. Lions also recently hired Donnie Henderson as their defensive coordinator, formerly of the New York Jets. They also have their eye on Mike Martz as the offensive coordinator. There has to be some excitement over the coordinator moves at the very least. Well, those moves will only be as good as how the players perform on the field, and with that being said, they’ll most likely acquire a good player from the draft at the #9 position. According to NFL Draft Countdown, they have Lions choosing a USC product and you can’t go wrong with those guys. Winston Justice, who played right tackle for the Trojans is one of them. If not, USC RB Lendale White should still be on the board as well, if the Lions decide the injury prone Kevin Jones is not the answer.
Will White blow by Bush in the draft also? I doubt it, but you never know.
More than likely USC RB Reggie Bush will enter the NFL draft, foregoing his senior year, in which he is projected to be a #1 pick. For Lendale White, there is no uncertainty, he will definitely declare for draft. While White gets far less of the fanfare from sports media, wouldn’t it be funny if ends up in the top 5 in the draft just like the Auburn tandem last year of Ronnie Brown, selected #2, and Carnell Williams, selected #5. Miami and Tampa were both pleased with their pick, especially Tampa choosing Cadillac, who looks like their franchise running back for the next 5+ years. Brown ended up splitting carries with Ricky Williams, who came back from retirement. The parallels are there for the USC tandem are there, especially if the Houston Texans select Reggie Bush, will he have to split carries with incumbent RB Dominick Davis, or will Davis be used as trade bait?
Ok, so maybe, just maybe, this wasn’t the right move.
Maurice Clarett has been in the news quite a bit with his recent legal woes, this has made me wonder what if he were selected in this past years’ NFL draft by another ballclub. Some notable running backs that were taken after Clarett were fourth rounders: Marion Barber of the Dallas Cowboys, Brandon Jacobs of the New York Giants, and sixth rounder Cedric Houston of the New York Jets. All of whom have played a fairly large role for their teams this year.
Maybe the Tuna, coach Bill Parcells could have gave Clarett some of that tough love he has known to give to some of his “troubled” players. New York Giants coach Tom Coughlin is almost of the same tough love mold, Coughlin being an ex-assistant to Parcells. Coach Herman Edwards also is well-known for caring for his players off the field as much if not more than even on the field. Maybe in these environments, Clarett could have steered clear of his legal troubles after being released by the Denver Broncos. I’m not hear to second guess the Denver Broncos, many expert analysts thought if Clarett was going to succeed, Denver would be the perfect place, where many non high-profile RB’s with even less talent than Clarett have succeeded. Denver had such great depth at the RB position they could afford to gamble. Denver’s third round selection gamble did not hurt the organization, but maybe Clarett was the one who ended up getting burned.
This game caught my eye last night, I’ve been hearing that the Ducks were being disrespected by not being invited to a BCS bowl game. With the result, the bowl selection committee was correct. The final score 17-14, with the Ducks threatening to score in the final minutes, already in field goal range, Ducks quaterback throws an interception to end the game.
Funny notes towards the end of the game: Brady Leaf (Oregon) threw an INT with 33 seconds on the enemy 10 yard line. Brady is the younger brother of failed NFL QB Ryan Leaf - who oddly enough is well known for throwing lots of INTs. After the play, the linebacker Clint Ingram was called for a unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for celebrating. On the insueing play on offense, Oklahoma QB Rhett Bomar was called for the same penalty after spiking the ball in celebration, which stopped the clock. On the next down they needed to take a knee again and let time expire, Oklahoma now was almost at their own endzone, almost causing a safety or fumble. Don’t blame it all on Leaf though, he was orginally the third-string QB.
Pat Riley Trying to Stop USC’s 3-peat

Not only do the USC Trojans have to worry about the Texas Longhorns in the Rose Bowl, but they are trying to be stopped by NBA coach Rat Riley’s lawyers. Coach Riley came up with the phrase and actually has a trademark on its use: If anyone else uses “threepeat” or “3peat”, he can demand financial reward for infringement. Anyone who wants to manufacture clothing with the term “3peat” will need to get a license from Riles & Co.
