Gary Bettman“Air Canada is a great brand, as is the National Hockey League, and if they decide that they need to do other things with their sponsorship dollars, that’s their prerogative.” That was NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman’s response to the threat from Air Canada to cancel their sponsorship deal with the NHL unless the latter implements harsher punishments for offenders who put others’ safety at risk with their style of play, such as with the hit issued by Zdeno Chara to Max Pacioretty in a game on Tuesday.

Zack GreinkeDue to an extreme game of pick-up basketball, Zack Greinke has a hairline fracture in a rib on the left side of his body and will likely start the MLB season on the disabled list. Fans of the right-hander in Milwaukee will have to wait a few more weeks before they see their new ace in a Brewers uniform. It’s the latest mini-tragedy for a team who has had more than their fair share of them over the last 30 years.

Zdeno Chara Hits Max PaciorettyMontreal’s Max Pacioretty got a severe concussion and a broken neck. Boston’s Zdeno Chara got nothing. This was the outcome after Chara checked Pacioretty into the turnbuckle in Tuesday’s game between the two bitter rivals. Chara got a five-minute major for interference and a one-game misdemeanor because the NHL rulebook calls for it if the receiving player is injured. But no supplemental discipline is going to the Bruins’ monster blueliner. Pacioretty, on the other hand, may never fully recover, let alone play hockey again.

Adam Wainwright suffered an elbow injury and may be out the 2011 seasonThe St. Louis Cardinals suffered a big blow to their success when it was reported that pitcher Adam Wainwright has a possible serious elbow injury and could miss the entire 2011 season. Saying that the loss of Wainwright is damaging to the Cardinals is an understatement as he's won 39 games the past two seasons, including 20 games in 2010, finishing with a 2.42 ERA and 213 strikeouts, as well as second in the voting for National League Cy Young, which Roy Halladay of the Philadelphia Phillies won. Wainwright is in the middle of his prime at 29-years-old, so losing a season hurts if it comes to that. However, he's still young enough to recover from elbow surgery, most likely Tommy John surgery if he needs to go under the knife. He's in the middle of getting a second opinion before surgery becomes a tangible option.

Islanders-PenguinsThe New York Islanders have made a lot of headlines in the last two weeks, which is interesting considering the horrible state of their franchise. After the Isles faced the Penguins last week in a game that saw Pittsburgh goalie Brent Johnson shut out New York 3-0 and knock Islander goalie Rick DiPietro out with one punch and putting him on the bench for the next month or so, the two teams met again on Friday night with what couldn’t be a more different ending.

Rick DiPietroWhenever it seems like things could not get worse for the New York Islanders, things get worse for the New York Islanders. The latest blow came on Friday when the team announced that top goaltender Rick DiPietro is going to miss the next four-to-six weeks. This occurred after DiPietro got into a fight with Penguins goalie Brent Johnson, or more accurately, he got into a punch. Johnson skated the length of the ice, threw one left hook and DiPietro was finished.

Tom KostopoulosWhen Calgary’s Tom Kostopoulos hit Detroit’s Brad Stuart in the head during a game last week, NHL disciplinarian Colin Campbell came down quickly with a six-game suspension. Whether you think six games is too few considering Stuart will be gone six weeks is open to debate, but you have to give the NHL credit for at least recognizing  the growing concern and danger surrounding head hits and attempting to abate them. Whether that’s working or not is a different matter.

Derek RoyThe Buffalo Sabres will miss Derek Roy. He’ll miss the next 4-6 months with a torn quad tendon that requires surgery. Roy suffered the injury in a 4-3 loss to Florida on Thursday when defenseman Dmitry Kulikov checked him into the boards. As Roy was taken off the ice, it seemed like Buffalo’s hopes and dreams went too. The team has struggled all season and Roy was an offensive highlight in an otherwise dim lineup.

Jason PominvilleColin Campbell was busy on Tuesday, handing out a number of suspensions. Among the hit list was James Wisniewski of the Islanders for his obscene gesture towards Sean Avery, as well as Niklas Hjalmarsson on Chicago for his blind hit from behind against Jason Pominville, which resulted in Pominville's being carried off the ice on a stretcher. Both Wisniewski and Hjalmarsson were suspended for a pair of games for their individual and fundamentally different rule infractions.
