Jari Kurri featuring Team Finland

NHL Hall of Famer Jari Kurri is back in the NHL. Sort of. He is attending games in an attempt to evaluate the play of various Finnish skaters. As the general manager of Team Finland, he is responsible for putting together a winning unit to represent his country at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Canada. While Kurri is one of the most successful hockey players of all-time, he certainly has his work cut out for him as GM.

The United States team had a disappointing show throughout the entire 2006 Olympics and were official eliminated after losing to Finland 4-3. One of the factors was a lack of team unity, something Mike Modano was very critical about. It seemed as if the team wasn’t on the same page and were traveling constantly to separate hotels, on separate flights, tickets, meals and things of that nature. Fans should have known things were heading the wrong way when they were only to scratch up a tie with the Latvia team.
Chad Hedrick has been extremely critical of Shanni Davis for not participating in the team pursuit event, an event where the US did not medal. Hedrick who won the gold in the 5,000 meter has been consistently been asked about his views on Davis’ no show rather than his own gold medal, and has grown tired of the controversy. Davis who won the 1,000 meter event did not want to join due to the lack of time to prepare for multiple events on consecutive days. Davis is also the first African-American to win an Olympic gold, has been coming off like the villain, but some of the criticism has been unfairly warranted.

Americans Hannah Teter, Gretchen Bleiler Win Gold and Silver in Half Pipe Event

Hannah Teter took home the gold and Gretchen Bleiler won the silver medal in the half pipe competition. Bleiler is well known for her modeling in FHM magazine. Teter and Bleiler were interviewed this morning on Cold Pizza, to the dismay of Jay Crawford. The two girls seemed to be “high” on life, among other things, in the video conference interview. More subtle evidence showed up when Jay Crawford asked them where would their next destination would be. The girls mentioned Hawaii, where “Puff the Dragon” came from. At the end of the segment Jay Crawford mentioned the bar has now been officially raised for guest interviews.

Downhill skier Lindsey Kildow gave her family and fans quite a scare, but managed to escape with just minor injuries to her hip. She has not ruled out competing in the rest of the Olympic games. Kildow crashed on her left hip at onto the course at about 50 mph during a pratice run. What is interesting is that the Al Michaels/ Oswald the Rabbit trade has already reaped benefits for ABC/ Disney. On ESPN.COM (whose parent company is ABC) there is now a mutual partnership with NBC, linking extended NBC coverage with a slideshow of the Kildow crash.

Michelle Kwan Drops Out of Olympic Games

After coming up short for a gold medal in the 1998 and 2002 Olympic games, Kwan was determined to maintain her amateur eligibility for the 2006 games in Torino. In the previous two Olympic games she was favored to win the gold medal, but ended up settling for a silver in the 1998 Nagano games and a bronze medal in the 2002 Salt Lake City games.
Kwan mentioned not having any regrets, she has had a great career that included 9 US championships and 5 world championships. Kwan did not participate in this years U.S. Nationals due to a groin injury and the same injury is keeping her from being at 100% for the Olympics. She did not want to participate without being as healthy as possible. She will replaced by Emily Hughes, who was placed 3rd in the U.S. Nationals. This is a change, as the norm sees the top two skaters competing in the Olympics.
Ian Thorpe, a superb swimmer from Australia, will call it quits after the 2008 Olympics, at the ripe old age of 25. Thorpe, nick-named the “Thorpedo” was outstanding in the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece, where he picked up two gold medals and a silver for participating in a riveting four man relay race against Michael Phelps and the United States team. He has placed a total of nine times in the Olympics, including five gold medals, three silver medals and one bronze medal.
