The anti-storybook season of Jorge Posada became more interesting this week. Not only did the veteran New York Yankees player celebrate his 40th birthday by striking out looking to end and lose a 5-4 game to the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday, he also announced that he’s considering playing in 2012. The most interesting part is that there’s a better chance that no pitcher will go down with another arm injury ever again than the Yankees signing Posada one more time.

New York Yankees pitcher Andy Pettitte to retire
New York Yankees pitcher Andy Pettitte will be hanging up his glove and will retire, ending what has to be one of the better MLB careers a player could have. Pettitte won five World Series rings (1996, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2009) with the Yankees and is MLB all-time postseason winningest pitcher with 19 wins. He finished with a 240-138 record and 3.88 ERA in sixteen seasons, three with the Houston Astros and 13 with the Bronx Bombers. His candidacy for the Hall of Fame will be contentious as he did not win the magical benchmark of 300 wins, but 240 victories and an under 4.00 ERA in the Modern Era, as well as the rings and playoff wins, will make the voting close. However, that's all in the past and it's time for Pettitte to work on his future.

It looks like Andy Pettitte might be back again. The 37-year-old lefty is in talks with the Yankees for yet another one-year deal after Pettitte proved to be New York’s best starting pitcher in a World Series season. From a personal standpoint, he was just as effective this year as he was in 2006. Pettitte is proving that, despite his age, he is capable of pitching with the best of them, and his services are something that the Yankees are interested in retaining in 2010.

Yanks’ Great Eight Streak Ends

The New York Yankees have been burning up the wins column since the All-Star break, but may have hit a wall yesterday, dropping a 6-4 decision to the Oakland Athletics in a game that pleased all kinds of fans, including those who love a good pitchers duel and those who enjoy a good slugfest.
In a game of first versus worst, the Bombers tried to extend their 8-game winning streak against the lowly A’s. With veteran Andy Pettitte (8-6) on the hill against rookie Gio Gonzalez (2-2), it looked like it might be another easy victory, but Gonzalez held his own against the powerhouse Yanks as he didn’t allow a hit until the fifth inning. In the sixth, after a walk to Derek Jeter with one out, Gonzalez threw an 0-1 fastball to Brett Gardner, who tripled to drive in the first run of the game. Gonzalez quickly recovered, inducing ground balls from Mark Teixeira and Alex Rodriguez to end the inning.
In the top of the seventh, the A’s exploded for six runs with four coming off of Pettitte, who to that point had allowed just two singles. The Athletics sent 10 men to the plate in the inning, highlighted by a pair of two-run hits by Landon Powell and Orlando Cabrera. The Yankees attempted a comeback in their half of the eighth, scoring three times, highlighted by Teixeira’s league-leading 25th home run, but it was too little, too late for New York as they suffered their first loss since July 12.
The Yankees are now 2-3 against the Athletics in 2009, and will be sending RHP Sergio Mitre (1-0) up against LHP Dallas Braden (7-8) as they try to start a new winning streak on Sunday. With the loss, New York lost a game in the AL East to the rival Boston Red Sox, who defeated the Baltimore Orioles 7-2. At 59-38, the Yankees still hold the best record in the American League, but now sit just 1.5 games ahead of the Sox.

Angels Defeat Yankees On Day of Trading Deadline

Pudge Rodriguez made his New York Yankees debut yesterday, but it was of no use against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. The Halos downed the Bronx Bombers 12-6, with help from homers off the bat of Torii Hunter, Juan Rivera, and Vladimir Guerrero. Andy Pettitte took the loss for the Yanks, in his poor outing he went 5.1 innings, allowing 11 hits and nine earned runs.
“You got athletes on this team,” said Hunter,. “We’re Hyenas. We take advantage of the weak link. You make a mistake and we’re gone.”

Yankees Avoid Sweep From Reds

The Cincinnati Reds entered Yankee stadium yesterday seeking a sweep of their 3 game series. Instead, Andy Pettitte pitched 6 innings of shutout baseball en route to a 4-1 New York victory. Pettitte notched his 8th win of the season, while Mariano Rivera earned his 21st save.
“We wanted this one badly, but it’s tough to sweep these guys,” Reds manager Dusty Baker said.
