In case you missed the memo, Major League Baseball has found a new way to market its image. MLB and Mrs. Fields Famous Brands have reached an agreement, allowing the cookie company to bake its doughy discs of goodness and brand them with the logos of the 30 MLB teams, making Mrs. Fields an officially licensed product of MLB. Before creating her world famous cookies, Debbi Fields was a ball girl for the Athletics in the 70s, so you could just say that Mrs. Fields is getting in touch with her roots.

Royals right-hander Zack Greinke still has two years left on a four-year deal he signed in 2009, but a lot of talk is coming out lately about Kansas City entertaining offers for the 27-year-old pitcher. Greinke, the 2009 American League Cy Young Award winner can fetch a great return. His 2010 totals – 4.17 ERA, 220 innings pitched, 181 strikeouts, 1.25 WHIP – were also rather impressive, considering the team playing behind him.

Eric Hinske’s World Series run is over

Eric Hinske has begun an unusually long offseason. After his Atlanta Braves were eliminated by the San Francisco Giants on Monday night, the 2002 American League Rookie of the Year finds himself unemployed yet again as his latest one year contract ended with the Braves hopes of making it back to the World Series for the first time since 1999. He’ll now have to go home and watch the Series on television for his first time since 2006.

Jed Lowrie making the best of unique situation with the Boston Red Sox

Jed Lowrie has been receiving some extra playing time with the Red Sox. He’s been given first base duties while Manager Terry Francona tries to figure out what to do with the vacancy created by the injury to Kevin Youkilis. Primarily a shortstop or second baseman, Lowrie has just been doing as he’s told in order to keep his team in the playoff race. The Sox remain a handful of games back of Tampa Bay and New York, but are having difficulty gaining ground.

With a 2-1 win over Oakland on Monday night, the Boston Red Sox have now won four of their last 12 games. They have fallen behind both the Yankees and the Rays in the AL East and are one more string of losses away from being out of it; considering the level of competition in their division at least. But with almost a dozen regulars out with injuries, the Red Sox are still in a surprisingly good position.

David Ortiz to make sixth MLB All-Star appearance

Has David Ortiz truly come back, or is he just going through a hot streak? His struggles have been well-documented since 2009 when his extended slump began, especially when he was dropped in the lineup for the first time in his career. In 2010, Ortiz has shown old signs of his form as he has blasted 19 home runs and has been selected as one of the American League All-Stars and will show up in Los Angeles for this week’s festivities.

Is Papelbon the current Rivera?

It was a busy week and change for Jonathan Papelbon. On the 19th, he helped his team defeat the Dodgers and got a win. The following day was a similar Red Sox victory, this time getting a save for his efforts. On the 23rd, the Rockies made quick work of Papelbon, giving him his first blown save of the season as well as a loss. The next night looked similar as Papelbon blew another save, but his team bounced back and he got his second win of the week. On Saturday, Papelbon returned to normal recording his 17th save of the season in an eight-pitcher effort to defeat the Giants.

The knuckleball is a lost art. Only a handful of pitchers in the major leagues throw it, namely Tim Wakefield and R.A. Dickey, but beyond them, you will not see anybody crossing up any batters with the corkscrew pitch on a regular basis. Even less common are guys who throw a knuckleball sparingly as part of a repertoire and not simply as a primary pitch with a 70-to-80 MPH “fastball” as a part of the mix.

Red Sox holdovers starting to age

The Boston Red Sox ended an 86-year-long World Series drought with their dramatic title run in 2004. Now, six years later, only a handful of players from that team still call Fenway Park home. Team mainstays Tim Wakefield, David Ortiz, Jason Varitek, and Kevin Youkilis are the only members of the Red Sox with two World Series rings adorning their fingers. Wakefield’s impact is only felt once every five days, and Youkilis is still a relatively young member, but how long is too long to hold on to legends who are no longer producing?

Dominating division putting others to shame

Has anybody else noticed that four of the five best records in the American League belong to teams from the East? The Rays and Yankees are one, two, split up only by Minnesota, who is a half-game ahead of both Boston and Toronto. Behind them is the AL West-leading Texas Rangers, who are two games back of them. From the Rays to the Jays, there is a 3.5 game gap, and there’s still two-thirds of the season left to play.
