Toronto Maple Leafs’ quest for a number one goalie
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, NHL,
Now that the Toronto Maple Leafs mercifully have been officially taken themselves out of playoff contention, the members of Leafs Nation have begun asking who they will turn to in goal for the 2011-12 season. After beginning the season with veteran J.S. Giguere and supposed-goalie-of-the-future Jonas Gustavsson, the Leafs found themselves playing behind most teams thanks to miserable netminding. With continued injuries to Giguere’s groin and Gustavsson’s heart, the Leafs looked way down the depth chart and brought up James Reimer.

Canadiens decision looking solid as Carey Price edges Jaroslav Halak

When Montreal dealt goaltender Jaroslav Halak to St. Louis last summer, many were quick to throw the Canadiens under the bus for cutting ties with Halak instead of Carey Price. How could they turn their backs on a goalie who was absolutely outstanding for over a month of playoff hockey? Still, the Canadiens did not believe that Halak was the better of the two. Plus, Price is younger, more controllable and shows more promise than Halak for the future.

Record-setting overtimes still not enough
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: NHL,
Despite the NHL’s attempt to compress the season in the midst of an Olympic year, it still seems like 2009-10 has been one of the longest seasons in years. That probably has something to do with the fact that there have been a record-setting number of extra-time games. With the final weekend of games to be played, there have been 290 games that have gone past 60 minutes, and another record 177 that have gone to a shootout.

A lot of noise is made when brothers get together in hockey. Whether they play together like the Sedins in Vancouver, or the Koivus going head to head when the Ducks meet the Wild. People talk about who will outscore who, how the brothers interact, what their lives off the ice are like - all kinds of things. On March 20, 1971, a very similar moment happened in the most unique of ways. Brothers Dave and Ken Dryden faced each other from 200-feet apart.

Rask and Varlamov topping rookie lists

The rookies in the NHL are making a huge impression on the fans nationwide. Everybody knows what John Tavares is doing for the Islanders as well as Niclas Bergfors in New Jersey, but there are two freshman goaltenders making a splash as well – Washington’s Semyon Varlamov and Boston’s Tuukka Rask. Both were first-round draft picks; Rask in 2005 and Varlamov in 2006, and both are dominating shooters across the league.

The land of the lost… For goalies at least
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Editorial, NHL,
The National Hockey League’s general managers have been discussing their game lately, making decisions on what changes are working, what needs improving, and what just plain needs to go. Not much is expected to change though, despite growing feelings to eliminate some of the more useless changes to the game, as the majority believe that the entire package of changes have equally contributed to the increased offense that the NHL has been striving to achieve for the last few years. Many of the newly introduced rules have involved eliminating play stoppages unless those were accompanied by a penalty of some kind.
