Is Jim Thome bound for Cooperstown?
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, MLB,
In past baseball eras, certain statistics virtually guaranteed a player admittance to the Hall of Fame. 300 wins for a pitcher is a benchmark, but many have started to question whether the time of the 300-win pitcher is over. Similarly, but getting less attention is the 500-home-run plateau for hitters. Only 25 players in history have reached that mark, and every one of those eligible have a place in the Hall of Fame. Three of those 25 are currently active.

Los Angeles Angels top list of Adrian Beltre suitors
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, MLB, Rumors,
Current reports say that the Angels are on top of the bunch looking to acquire Adrian Beltre, but at this point, it might make more sense to just sit back as spectators and wait patiently for Beltre to decide where he wants to go. We’ve already seen a bunch of surprises this offseason. Nobody thought Cliff Lee would go to Philadelphia. Nobody thought Zack Greinke would go to Milwaukee. Nobody thought Jayson Werth was worth $126 million.

Another possible Rocktober as the Colorado Rockies surge
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, MLB,
Thanks to a terrible past couple of weeks for the San Diego Padres, the San Francisco Giants have made the National League West pennant race one to keep an eye on. Don’t look now, but the Colorado Rockies have made yet another late-season surge and with a 10-game winning streak have made it a three-team show. There’s still some work to be done before we witness another “Rocktober,” but the fact that Colorado is making this kind of thing a habit is pretty interesting.

Pete Rose to be honored by Cincinnati Reds for 25th anniversary
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, MLB,
Pete Rose, baseball’s infamous gambler, still is not – and may never be – in the MLB Hall of Fame. But the former Cincinnati Reds player and manager will be honored by his former club for the 25th anniversary of his breaking Ty Cobb’s all-time career hits total. The Reds received permission from MLB Commissioner Bud Selig to honor the disgraced hitter for just the second time since being banned in 1989. Rose missed out on the Reds honoring of the 1975 World Series champions in 2000 as well as the old-timers softball game commemorating the closing of Cinergy Field in 2002.

Luis Castillo bumping heads with the Mets after benching
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, MLB, Rumors,
New York Mets second baseman Luis Castillo is unhappy with his team. Can you blame him? The 34-year-old veteran was recently replaced by rookie Ruben Tejada for the starter’s position. Castillo has been struggling somewhat this season, his numbers are down from what they’ve been in previous years, but you’d be hard-pressed to find a good major league baseball player who has not had at least one bad season to his credit, despite Castillo’s advanced age.

Chavez falls for the last time?
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, Injuries, MLB,
Veteran Athletic Eric Chavez’s days may be numbered. The 32-year old third baseman suffered a neck injury and has landed on the disabled list - again - and although he claims he’s not thinking about retiring, he has admitted that this could be it. Chavez has said he’s had neck problems since colliding with minor-league infielder Adrian Cardenas during spring training. Chavez tried to play through it, but the soreness of two bulging discs has caught up with him.

Something’s wrong with Wright
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, MLB,
What the heck is going on with David Wright? Going into Thursday’s games, he has 55 strikeouts, which leads the Major Leagues and has him on pace to finish in the top 10 in baseball history for the most strikeouts in a season, which, by the way, is almost 80 more strikeouts than he’s had in a season in his career. Is there something wrong with Wright, or is he just going through the worst slump ever?

Albert Pujols Dings #40
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, MLB,
He did it again. Albert Pujols smacked his 40th home run on Sunday, marking the fifth time in his already storied career that he’s reached the plateau. With the bases empty in the fourth, he drove a 1-1 fastball from San Diego’s Edward Mujica over the right field wall to become just the 20th player in MLB history to reach 40 home runs in a season five times. What makes this year even more special for Pujols is that this is the earliest he has reached 40. The fastest prior to this year was when he hit his 40th on August 29th in 2004.
