Cabrera’s MVP season falling short

Miguel Cabrera is having a heck of a season. The Detroit first baseman has been spoken of as the potential first player since Carl Yastrzemski in 1967 to win the MLB hitting Triple Crown, but a lack of power in recent weeks as well as some bad luck has stalled his efforts, if not completely derailed them. Cabrera will need to put together one of the best months in baseball history if he wants to earn the honor so many seemed to think he could achieve.

A-Rod misses home run number 600 for the 46th time

Another day, another oh-fer for Alex Rodriguez. The Yankees third baseman continues to chase home run number 600. A-Rod has been stuck on 599 for almost two weeks and in that time, interest in him achieving that milestone has been overshadowed by interest in him not hitting it. Countless numbers of pictures have been taken of Rodriguez’s swings, but not one has been truly worth anything, and the annoyance is starting to show as of late.

The long ball is not enough

There’s something to be said about a team that knows how to hit the long ball. That thing is that if that’s all they can hit, they’re still going to lose. Take the Toronto Blue Jays, who lead the majors in long balls with 115. They also just dropped two of three games to the Philadelphia Phillies. The Jays were limited to just seven runs in the series, every one of which came in as part of their four homers.

A lot of noise has been made recently over Terry Francona’s pinch-hitting for David Ortiz in recent weeks. It’s never happened in Ortiz’s career, but let’s face it, Ortiz has lost a thing or two in his swing lately. His terribly slow start to 2009 was just the beginning, and 2010 hasn’t been much different for the DH home run champion. Ortiz’s struggles aren’t helped by the fact that whenever he steps to the plate, he’s already at a disadvantage thanks to the defensive positioning known as “The Shift”.

Toronto’s Wells on pace for 243 homers

Vernon Wells, Toronto’s highly overpaid All-Star center fielder is already 20 percent of the way to matching his home run total from 2009. With a pair of big bombs against Texas’ Dustin Nippert and Darren Oliver on Wednesday night to go along with his Opening Day blast to ruin Scott Feldman’s start gives him three homers in the first two games of the season. In 158 games last year, he only managed to reach a total of 15.

High hopes for Twins’ Kubel

When a player has a fantastic season, the expectations of him are that much higher the following year, and that is certainly the case right now for Minnesota’s Jason Kubel. He tore it up as designated hitter for the Twins in 2009, and after experiencing some incredible personal and team success last season, Minnesota is hoping to improve in many areas, and while Target Field is one of them, they hope the on field product is that much better.

Pujols will play in 2010

Albert Pujols is going to play. He faced the media this weekend after his first spring workout and has said that his elbow is fine and there’s a good chance he’ll never need the dreaded Tommy John surgery. After going under the knife last October to repair and clean the bones in his elbow, the St. Louis slugger was happy to say that his elbow is responding well and he hopes he’ll be able to play a full season.

What’s Bothering Josh Beckett?

Josh Beckett is the ace of the Boston Red Sox’ pitching staff. He is a former World Series MVP and American League All-Star; and this season had been posting numbers worth of Cy Young consideration. However, just a few weeks ago, all that began to change for the 29-year old right handed hurler.
Since August 12, Beckett has been the exact opposite of what he is expected to be. His ace pitcher status is definitely in question. Over his last five starts, he’s gone 1-1 in 31.1 innings, giving up 33 hits and 7 walks. What has been among the most un-Beckett-like is the fact that he has given up 26 earned runs over that stretch, but the most shocking number is the home runs he has given up. In those give games, he’s allowed 14 home runs. He’d only given up 10 home runs throughout the season prior to then.

Albert Pujols Dings #40

He did it again. Albert Pujols smacked his 40th home run on Sunday, marking the fifth time in his already storied career that he’s reached the plateau. With the bases empty in the fourth, he drove a 1-1 fastball from San Diego’s Edward Mujica over the right field wall to become just the 20th player in MLB history to reach 40 home runs in a season five times. What makes this year even more special for Pujols is that this is the earliest he has reached 40. The fastest prior to this year was when he hit his 40th on August 29th in 2004.
