Mike Modano signs with Dallas Stars, retires

Mike ModanoAs so many fine hockey players have this summer, Mike Modano is officially retiring from the NHL. However, he first had to finish with his latest contract – a one-day deal with the Dallas Stars valued at $999,999, which provided a sense of closure to the former number 9 and fans of the franchise all around, as Modano spent 20 of his 21 NHL seasons in the Minnesota/Dallas organization. Modano will go down as one of – if not the greatest American-born player in NHL history.

The history of the NHL: The Expansion Era

Wayne GretzkyThe history of the NHL spans almost 100 years, and to make things easier, it has been broken in down into several eras. The third era is commonly referred to as the “Expansion Era”, taking place from 1967-1992, when the NHL doubled in size by adding six new franchises to the Original Six to create a more competitive league and grew to allow more teams into the playoffs, and more seven-game series. Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and St. Louis still operate where they were, the Minnesota North Stars moved to Dallas where they now play, and the California Seals ceased operations in 1978 after merging with the aforementioned North Stars.

Gainey steps down in Montreal

Bob GaineyBob Gainey’s time in Montreal is over. He stepped down as general manager of the Montreal Canadiens on Monday, which is just the latest in a series of blows to the Canadiens organization as they celebrate their centennial year. This was a move that many say was planned well in advance by Gainey, and that if he wanted to, he could have stayed with the club as GM for years to come. But for Gainey, a Canadien for life, that wasn’t in the cards.

California Golden SealsThe National Hockey League has gone through several eras in its long and storied history. The “Original Six” era is still commonly seen as one of the most important times, but the “Expansion” era from 1967-1992 played a major part in shaping the league we see today. In 1967, six teams were added to the league, doubling the amount of teams and setting the stage for new rivalries. Of those six teams, one in particular stands out. Or doesn’t.
