Boston Bruins roster remains intact after Stanley Cup season

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, Championship, NHL,

Mark RecchiIn recent seasons, we’ve seen Stanley Cup rosters disband (if not explode) during the summer months. The Pittsburgh Penguins lost a good handful of players after their run, while seemingly half of the Chicago Blackhawks roster was spread out among the league after they won. The Boston Bruins are looking to try the opposite, as most of the members of the 2011 Stanley Cup winners are back, which many think will give them the upper hand in their road to repeat.

Boston Bruins in do or die situation against Montreal Canadiens

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, NHL, Playoffs,

Milan Lucic and P.K. SubbanThe Boston Bruins beat themselves on Saturday night, falling 3-1 to the Montreal Canadiens in game two of their playoff series and going behind two games to none. The Bruins announced late that Zdeno Chara wouldn’t play, and they couldn’t compensate for their noticeably smaller blue line as the Canadiens infiltrated the Boston zone often. At the other end, Habs goalie Carey Price was spectacular again, stopping 34 of 35 shots in the win.

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, NHL, Rumors,

Marty TurcoDespite not having played in a game since March 17, Chicago Blackhawks goalie Marty Turco is making headlines. Turco is under investigation for allegedly wagering on Tuesday night’s Blackhawks game against the Montreal Canadiens while on the bench. A Habs fan called into a Montreal-based radio show to talk about how he and Turco made several bets about how the game would end up. After losing 2-1 in overtime, Turco paid up in several Canadian bills.

Zdeno Chara receives no supplemental discipline for hit on Max Pacioretty

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, Injuries, NHL,

Zdeno Chara Hits Max PaciorettyMontreal’s Max Pacioretty got a severe concussion and a broken neck. Boston’s Zdeno Chara got nothing. This was the outcome after Chara checked Pacioretty into the turnbuckle in Tuesday’s game between the two bitter rivals. Chara got a five-minute major for interference and a one-game misdemeanor because the NHL rulebook calls for it if the receiving player is injured. But no supplemental discipline is going to the Bruins’ monster blueliner. Pacioretty, on the other hand, may never fully recover, let alone play hockey again.

How many is too many for outdoor NHL games?

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Editorial, NHL,

2011 NHL Heritage ClassicSo the Calgary Flames continued their hot streak in the freezing cold, beating the Montreal Canadiens 4-0 in the 2011 Heritage Classic, held at McMahon Stadium in Calgary. Throughout the game, the announcers could only talk about the dropping temperature, how bad the ice was and what the players had to do to adjust to the outdoor conditions. Despite the success of the Winter Classic in recent years, aren’t these games getting a little out of hand?

Linus Omark shaking things up in Edmonton

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, NHL,

Linus OmarkThere seems to be an outbreak of young, cocky players in the NHL, and a lot of the stern veterans don’t seem to like it. First, P.K. Subban of the Canadiens was benched for his aggressive, take-no-crap-from-anybody style of play combined with the fact that he actually has thoughts inside his hockey player head that he’s willing to share. Now, Edmonton’s Linus Omark – a Swedish phenom – made his NHL debut against Tampa Bay on Friday night, and won the game by using a spin-a-rama move to throw off the goalie before netting the winning goal in a shootout.

Canadiens decision looking solid as Carey Price edges Jaroslav Halak

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, NHL,

Jaroslav HalakWhen Montreal dealt goaltender Jaroslav Halak to St. Louis last summer, many were quick to throw the Canadiens under the bus for cutting ties with Halak instead of Carey Price. How could they turn their backs on a goalie who was absolutely outstanding for over a month of playoff hockey? Still, the Canadiens did not believe that Halak was the better of the two. Plus, Price is younger, more controllable and shows more promise than Halak for the future.

Robin Lehner makes unexpected NHL debut

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, NHL,

Robin LehnerOttawa Senators goalie Robin Lehner made an uncharacteristic NHL debut on Saturday night against Montreal. Lehner was recalled from Binghamton of the AHL before Saturday’s game and ended up making an appearance when he started the third period. Ottawa starting goalie Brian Elliot broke a skate between periods and the referees were not willing to wait for him to find a replacement. Lehner was thrown into net and brought his career minutes total to four minutes, 42 seconds.

Tucker retires due to lack of contract offers

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, NHL,

Darcy TuckerDarcy Tucker won’t be playing in the NHL this year; or ever again. After a 15-year career with Montreal, Tampa Bay, Toronto and Colorado, Tucker has announced his retirement after a summer of shopping himself around that ultimately ended without him finding a city willing to pay the money he felt he deserved. In a league where many teams are looking for young talents or fighting salary cap issues, Tucker is an odd man out.

Halak sent to Blues with a modest ‘thank you’

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, NHL, Trades,

Jaroslav HalakThe near-Conn Smythe winner Jaroslav Halak has been rewarded for his incredible playoff run. The Montreal Canadiens sent him off to St. Louis in a trade for a pair of young prospects. In the process, Montreal’s former main goaltender Carey Price once again has the starter’s job; but only for the time being. The trade is being questioned by many; all wondering if it was a good idea to move Halak and keep Price. Due to their contracts, it was inevitable that one had to go, but why did it have to be the one who gave hope to the otherwise defeated city?
