Manny sticking around for years to come
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, Editorial, MLB,
Manny Ramirez has come out and said that this will be his last year in a Dodger uniform. He’ll play as much as he’s asked to play, but once his contract expires, he’ll either look for a DH role with an American League team or even consider retirement. After teams failed to show significant interest prior to 2009, Manny signed a deal with Los Angeles that could have seen him test free agency again for this year, but he opted to stay in California, which was probably in his best interests.

Fan backs Santana’s bold claim
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, Editorial, MLB,
I wrote an opinion story a few days ago about how Mets pitcher Johan Santana blatantly told the media that he was the best pitcher in his division and how that was wrong. A reader left a comment calling me an idiot saying I didn’t know anything about Santana and that he’s the highest paid in his division, as if that warrants him calling himself the best. The reader then said that Santana was asked a stupid question to begin with. Regardless of the ignorance of the commenter’s words, I began wondering if there was, in fact, any merit to his opinions. There aren’t.

Albert Pujols - The clear choice
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, Editorial, MLB, Rumors,
There are only two more awards to be awarded before the books on the 2009 MLB season can be officially closed – one of which is the National League Most Valuable Player. Last year’s winner, Albert Pujols of the St. Louis Cardinals, looks poised to repeat. If he wins, it will be his third NL MVP nod, as he also took home the hardware in 2005 after knocking off Barry Bonds and his four consecutive titles. What makes him the most obvious choice is that he greatly improved on many of his totals from last season.

NL Cy Young Award winner - Tim Lincecum
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, Editorial, Kudos, MLB,
Tim’s done it again. Tim Lincecum of the San Francisco Giants won his second consecutive National League Cy Young Award. Lincecum edged out the pair of St. Louis Cardinals aces, Adam Wainwright and Chris Carpenter. He becomes the first pitcher to repeat as the winner since Randy Johnson did so with the Diamondbacks four times from 1999-2002. It makes sense that the number one pitcher of 2008 won again, as while Lincecum’s wins total was down in 2009, he improved in almost every other area.

NL Rookie of the Year - Chris Coghlan
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, Editorial, MLB,
Chris Coghlan has achieved something rather unexceptional. He plays for the Florida Marlins and has been chosen as the National League’s 2009 Rookie of the Year. The 24-year-old outfielder is also the third Marlin to win the award in seven years, joining shortstop Hanley Ramirez and lefty starter Dontrelle Willis on the list of top rookies to rise to the top with the Fish, although none of them were originally drafted by Florida. Coghlan was picked by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 18thd round of the 2003 Draft, but did not sign, instead opting to raise his stock. He was ultimately drafted in the first round of the 2006 Draft and signed by Florida.

NL Gold Gloves a golden joke
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, Editorial, MLB,
The National League handed out their Gold Glove Awards, and as usual, there was a sense of comic relief because of some of the winners – specifically at third base. Ryan Zimmerman of the Washington Nationals took home his first Gold Glove, perhaps solely because the Nats needed anything with which to say 2009 was successful. He finished ahead of a much more deserving candidate from San Diego in Kevin Kouzmanoff. The suspicion is that Gold Glove winners – a defensive honor – are often chosen based on offensive statistics. A comparison between the two NL third basemen gives credit to that theory.

The So-Called Pennant Races
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: MLB, News, Playoffs,
September is here, and so the home stretch for the 2009 MLB season is upon us. The playoff races will take center stage in sports media, but for the first time in years, the races look as if they might be over before they really get started. Going into Wednesday night’s action, the closest pennant race was the American League Central, where the Detroit Tigers hold a 3.5 game lead over the Minnesota Twins, who, when it comes to playoff races, are a pathetic two games above .500. In the Central’s National League counterpart, the St. Louis Cardinals have already all-but-clinched the division as they hold a 10.5 game lead over the Chicago Cubs. It would take a colossal turn of events for the Cards to miss the playoffs in 2009.

Pennant or Wild Card; It’s All the Same
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: MLB, Playoffs,
With the Colorado Rockies on a tear in the last two weeks, in direct contrast to the sloppy play from the Los Angeles Dodgers, it looks like we might have a pennant race on our hands over in the National League West. Going into their mid-week three game series against each other, the Dodgers held a three game lead over the Coloradans; and after Tuesday night, the gap shrunk thanks to Troy Tulowitzki’s 10th inning walk-off single.

Albert Pujols Dings #40
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, MLB,
He did it again. Albert Pujols smacked his 40th home run on Sunday, marking the fifth time in his already storied career that he’s reached the plateau. With the bases empty in the fourth, he drove a 1-1 fastball from San Diego’s Edward Mujica over the right field wall to become just the 20th player in MLB history to reach 40 home runs in a season five times. What makes this year even more special for Pujols is that this is the earliest he has reached 40. The fastest prior to this year was when he hit his 40th on August 29th in 2004.
