Ilya Kovalchuk taking New Jersey Devils up the standings
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, NHL,
In their last 25 games, the New Jersey Devils have recorded 42 out of a possible 50 points. This is the same team that only managed 22 points in their first 41 games. If the Ilya Kovalchuk nine-figure contract situation from last summer was the definition of “ridiculous,” this current run by the Devils to make an impact in the Eastern Conference must be the meaning of “absurd.”

Highs and lows halfway through the NHL season
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, Editorial, NHL,
We’re roughly halfway into the NHL season (the first group of all stars were announced, so it’s fair), which makes it time to take a look at the best and the worst in the league to this point. Who has performed above and below expectations, and who has remained par for the course so far? You have the usual suspects atop the standings, whether it’s Sidney Crosby or his Penguins, but where is Tampa Bay right now if not for Steven Stamkos?

New Jersey Devils not scaring anybody these days
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: NHL,
The New Jersey Devils’ season is probably already over. They are convincingly the second-worst team in the league in the standings, marginally ahead of the New York Islanders. Even if they turned things around, the Devils would still easily be the most disappointing team this season. They can’t win at home. They can’t win on the road. They can’t score goals at all. General Manager Lou Lamoriello put all of his eggs into one basket this past summer, and it seems he may have dropped the basket to the floor.

New Jersey Devils falling apart on and off the ice
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, NHL,
It’s going to take a heck of a winning streak to turn the New Jersey Devils from this season’s biggest bust into a playoff contender – at best. After headlining a rather tame summer with the contract controversy of Ilya Kovalchuk, the Devils now find themselves competing with the New York Islanders for last place in the Eastern Conference. The two anti-giants faced off against each other on Friday afternoon and the Devils found it impossible to score on Rick DiPietro, losing 2-0.

Ilya Kovalchuk back on market after being denied massive contract
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, Front Office, MLB,
On the 22-year anniversary of the Edmonton Oilers trade of Wayne Gretzky to the Los Angeles Kings, the NHL has achieved another victory; this time a much different one. Arbitrator Richard Bloch has decided in favor of the NHL in regards to the ludicrous 17-year, $102 million contract offered by the New Jersey Devils to Ilya Kovalchuk. With that decision, 2010’s hottest unrestricted free agent is back on the market, and New Jersey may not win out a second time.

NHLPA files grievance on behalf of Ilya Kovalchuk
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, NHL,
The Ilya Kovalchuk saga continued when the NHLPA filed a grievance on behalf of the reluctant free agent. After the deal was rejected by the NHL five days ago, the NHLPA had until 5 p.m. ET on Monday to file the grievance. They did and still had a couple of hours to spare for a late lunch. Now an independent arbitrator will be given the task of deciding whether or not the NHL’s decision was justified.

New Jersey Devils and Ilya Kovalchuk contract rejected by the NHL
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, NHL, Rumors,
So the NHL made another controversial, media-frenzy-inducing move; it’s just another day at the New York office. With the announcement that they rejected the New Jersey Devils-Ilya Kovalchuk contract worth $102 million over 17-years, this summer’s biggest hockey storybook was given a new chapter. Details why the NHL did not like the deal are tentative, but so far the reasoning says that the deal was rejected “on the grounds that it circumvents the NHL’s salary cap.”

Ilya Kovalchuk re-signs with the New Jersey Devils
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, NHL,
Now that Ilya Kovalchuk has finally made up his mind, the rest of the NHL can return to summer hours. After months of speculation of where this year’s top free agent would land, Kovy brought the discussion full-circle as he chose to stay in New Jersey, which is exactly where many thought he would end up when free agency opened up after the playoffs. Several teams tried their best to acquire the Russian-born scorer; most of them being the Los Angeles Kings; but in the end it was New Jersey who won.

Penguins struggle to steal win from Leafs
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: NHL, Playoffs,
It took the defending Stanley Cup champions to bring the Leafs down. Toronto is playing way out of its league this month, having taken nine of their last 13 games, and they’ve been doing it competitively. Eight of their nine wins have come either in overtime or a shootout. The only other was a 6-4 win against last-place Edmonton. Sunday evening’s 5-4 shootout loss to Pittsburgh is the latest sign that while 2009-10 is a write-off for the lackluster Leafs, some minor offseason tweaks and improvements might bode well for Toronto, and poorly for the rest of the league.

Devils add Kovalchuk as trade week continues
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, Editorial, NHL, Trades,
Another big trade has been completed and the New Jersey Devils have another captain among their ranks. Devils GM Lou Lamoriello completed a trade to bring in All-Star Ilya Kovalchuk from Atlanta. The 26-year-old has scored 31 goals in 49 games this season. Since debuting in 2001, Kovalchuk has netted 328 goals and 615 points in 594 games, so there’s certainly no surprise that he was as sought after as he was, and just when it seemed like the Kings would win the Kovalchuk Sweepstakes, the Devils swooped in and landed the Russian-born superstar.
