Oliver Perez
Thanks to a terrific pitching performance from Oliver Perez and a clutch two run jack from Endy Chavez the New York Mets took the first of three games from the New York Yankees. Despite pitching well, the tough luck loser is Andy Petitte and the winner is Oliver Perez. Petitte is now 2-3, and Perez is now 5-3. Also with a single in the third inning Perez now has seven hits for the season, tying him for the Major League lead hits for a pitcher with Livan Hernandez.

Sosa Successful In 07 Debut

Jorge Sosa
Jorge Sosa was very impressive on Saturday. He may have been impressive enough to hang around in the Majors. Making his season debut with the New York Mets, Sosa went 6.1 innings, gave up two runs on just four hits, and struck out three. Another important factor to his victory last night were his two walks. Sosa has the stuff to succeed in the majors, but in Spring Training he had severe control issues. The Mets would go on to defeat the Arizona Diamondbacks 6-2, thanks in part to a home run from Shawn Green in the 2nd inning. Green had three RBI’s on the night.

Loud chants of “Jimmy Rollins!” and heavy booing were frequent whether he was at the plate or in the field. A seven run eighth inning would lead to a decisive 11-5 Mets victory.

Picking up where he left off in the 2006 playoffs, Oliver Perez started off his 2007 season shutting down the Atlanta Braves. Of course, 11 runs of support from the Mets offense doesn’t hurt. Perez went seven strong innings, giving up five hits, zero walks, and striking out six. He also didn’t do too badly at the dish, scoring two runs with a base hit.
