MINNESOTA VIKINGS
2007 RECORD: 8-8
Overview: Considering the numbers they posted last year, the Minnesota Vikings should have been much better than a .500 club. The Purple Gang were the league’s top rushing team and they had the top defense against the run. So why the 8-8 record? Even though the Vikes knocked off the Super Bowl champion New York Giants during the season, they simply couldn’t win on the road (3-5). A quick look into their overall stats brings things into focus. Total first downs? The Vikes had 294 but gave up 305. Third down conversions? Minnesota had 69 out of 200 attempts but also gave up 94 out of 234. The real telling stat is total passing yards where super soph Tarvaris Jackson racked up 2745, but the defense surrendered 4225. Minnesota was just an average team with an average record.

DETROIT LIONS
2007 RECORD: 7-9
Overview: The Detroit Lions are a team of the future. Catch is, the future is still a few seasons off in Motown. Like the Chicago Bears, the Lions came within one win of both .500 and second place behind the Minnesota Vikings. Not bad for a team that spent most of the ‘06 season scraping bottom in the NFC North. Still, like Chicago and Minnesota, the Lions are rebuilding, patching up the defense, and strengthening the offense. Hope springs eternal during preseason, but that’s just a warm-up for the regular season.

CHICAGO BEARS
2007 RECORD: 7-9
Overview: No one will confuse this Chicago Bears team with the Monsters of the Midway or the ‘85 championship squad that ran roughshod over the rest of the NFL en route to a 46-10 Super Bowl victory over the New England Patriots. This team is still in the process of plugging numerous offensive and defensive holes. The ‘07 Bears ranked in the bottom quarter of all but one category - ranked 27th in total offense, a respectable ranking of 15th in passing, a deplorable showing of 30th in rushing, 28th in total defense, 27th in pass defense and 24th against the run. Help is on the way. Newly named signal caller Kyle Orton looked impressive in a preseason win over the Cincinnati Bengals. Still being ranked in the bottom quarter of offensive and defensive categories means lots of room for improvement. The mere fact that they came within one win of .500 ball despite all these shortcomings is a kind of minor miracle.

GREEN BAY PACKERS
2007 RECORD: 13-3
Overview: Cheddarheads can take heart in the fact that losing Fabulous Brett Favre to the New York Jets does not mean that the Green Bay Packers will drop from the top of the Black and Blue NFC North Division. Fifth year QB Aaron Rodgers posted respectable stats in ‘07 with 20 completions in 28 passing attempts with 1 TD. Look for Rodgers to make the most of his first full season in the Green and Gold.
