D’Backs place Randy Johnson on DL

Posted by Brendon Lindsey Categories: Athletes, Injuries, MLB

The Diamondbacks have placed starting pitcher Randy Johnson on the 15-day disabled list, citing “muscle tightness in back” as the issue. If it were something that minor, would he even be placed on the DL in the first place? Me thinks Arizona is hiding something.

So far this season Johnson has started 9 games for a record of 4-2. This year he has an ERA of 3.52, which is his lowest since 2004. Unfortunately, he’s also on pace for the least games he’s played since 1996, when he pitched in only 14 games for the Mariners. Edgar Gonzalez will take Randy’s spot against the Orioles, and Enrique Gonzalez (no relation) has been called up to join the Diamondback’s bullpen until the Big Unit makes his Big Recovery.

Rockies win; Beckett suffers first loss

Garrett Atkins and Kaz Matsui both go 3-5 from the plate as the Rockies beat the Red Sox 7-1, giving Josh Beckett his first loss since September 27, 2006. Atkins hit a grand slam in the third inning, which gave the Rockies a 5-0 lead and Atkins his fifth homer on the season; he also had a single and a double.

Last season, Atkins hit .329 with 29 homeruns. So far this year, he’s been struggling, and Rockies fans have been questioning whether or not Atkins was worth playing. So far in June, however, Atkins has had a resurgence, batting .342 (13-for-38) and knocking out two home runs, five doubles, and nine RBIs in 11 games, bringing his season average to .242.
