Tiny Tim tearing it up in Royals’ bullpen

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, MLB,

Tim CollinsAfter the Kansas City Royals dealt Zack Greinke in the offseason, many thought the team was up for yet another reboot of the familiar rebuilding theme. Instead, the Royals find themselves with a .500 record and sit ahead of both the Chicago White Sox and Minnesota Twins in their division. A good part of their early success is due to breakout rookie reliever Tim Collins. The small lefty has been solid on the hill and helped his team eke out some of their early 20 victories.

Jeff Skinner welcomes himself to the NHL

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, NHL,

Jeff SkinnerThe Carolina Hurricanes may put in a request to play all of their games in Finland. The ‘Canes won their second game in Helsinki in as many tries – and as many games this season – with a 2-1 shootout victory over the Minnesota Wild. Last year, Carolina only won two of their first 18 games; which was directly responsible for their finishing with just 80 points. By November 13 of last season, the Hurricanes had eight points total.

Toronto Blue Jays’ J.P. Arencibia shines in dream debut

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, MLB,

J.P. ArencibiaJ.P. Arencibia put together one of the greatest major league debuts ever on Saturday, going 4-for-5 with two home runs, a single and a double. No other major leaguer in the modern era has had that kind of production in their first big league game. Arencibia took an up and in fastball up and out over the left field fence. It was the first pitch he saw. Later, he took a low and away offering over the right field wall and rounded the bases to a standing ovation from the Rogers Centre faithful. He then delivered a curtain call.

Antti Niemi snubbed in favor of MartyTurco by Chicago Blackhawks

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, NHL,

Antti NiemiThe Chicago Blackhawks have made their decision. Rookie-turned sophomore goaltender Antti Niemi will not return to Chicago and veteran Marty Turco will don the red and black jersey for the defending Stanley Cup champions in the upcoming 2010-11 season. The Hawks turned down Niemi’s $2.75 million salary that was awarded by an arbitrator. The Hawks tried to find a way to justify the money, but after an $826,875 rookie contract, it was too difficult to fit the dramatic price tag increase under the salary cap.

Miller the key to Buffalo’s future

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, NHL, Playoffs,

Ryan MillerA goalie can definitely steal a series, but can a goalie steal a Stanley Cup? That’s the question being asked about Sabres goalie Ryan Miller. Facing the Boston Bruins in the first round of the 2010 NHL Playoffs, Buffalo will be putting a lot of weight on their Olympic goaltender in their first playoff appearance in three years. But Miller isn’t looking at the past. His full attention is on the series against Boston, and he looked pretty good in his first game.

Rookie Howard lighting up the goal crease

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, NHL,

Jimmy HowardThe Red Wings are in a place many teams would love to be. When it comes to goaltending, their depth runs farther than most, and while current starting goalie Jimmy Howard may not be a name you’ve heard or expected to be playing ahead of Chris Osgood, he’s not only doing it, he’s doing it well. The Red Wings rookie has a 24-14-8 record this season, which is incredible considering a year ago at this time, he was expected to be battling for the back-up role with Ty Conklin.

The legacy of the trading card

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Editorial, MLB, NBA, NFL, NHL,

Chuck KnoblauchRemember trading cards? You probably do. Those two-inch by three-inch photographs of yesteryear’s most beloved sports heroes and villains certainly had a special place in many a child’s daily activities. Trading with friends at school for your favorite player was always a thrill, but it was just as difficult to part with non-duplicates, even if it was some unknown like Bruce Hurst. Sets of trading cards were sought after with one goal in mind: collect them all.

Julian Wright To Enter NBA Draft

Posted by Milo Taibi Categories: Athletes, NBA, NCAA, College Baseball, News,

Julian WrightMuch to the chagrin of Kansas head coach Bill Self, forward Julian Wright made the decision Monday to enter the NBA draft, and skip his last two college basketball years. Julian Wright insists that money was not a factor in his decision.

““Money has never been my motivation, It’s not my family’s (motivation). Mostly, just playing and feeling like I’m able to advance my game to the next level. It’s not about the money. I’m just happy and grateful to have the opportunity.”

The former McDonalds all American did not hire an agent, so he would be eligible to return to Kansas before the draft. He’s known for having superior athleticism for a player of his size (6’8 inches tall, 225 pounds). He’s played numerous positions for Kansas, including point guard, small forward, and power forward. Wright’s announcement of entering the NBA draft was fairly unexpected, as he stated numerous times that he wouldn’t enter the NBA draft no matter his performance during his sophomore season.
