True Predictions: Colts and Saints Will Move on to the Super Bowl
Posted by Frank Nevarez Categories: Editorial, NFL, Playoffs,
Other than the New York Jets upset over the San Diego Chargers, all the favorites won last week. I went 3-1 and the season mark runs to 49-37. Will it be Peyton Manning or Brett Favre returning to the Super Bowl? What about those upstart Jets? Will there be more celebrating in New Orleans this weekend?

True Predictions: Saints, Colts, Vikings and Chargers Will Hold Serve
Posted by Frank Nevarez Categories: Editorial, NFL,
The quarterfinals of the NFL tournament are set. Last week I went 2-2. Season record hits 46-36. There’s a reason why the upcoming playoff home teams got byes last week. They’re a cut above the competition. The favored New England Patriots and Cincinnati Bengals lost last weekend. Were they out-played or just not so good? Will any of the favorites this week be out-played or have a bad day?

True Predictions: Steelers, Eagles, Ravens and Jets Have Something to Play For
Posted by Frank Nevarez Categories: Editorial, NFL,
The San Diego Chargers, Philadelphia Eagles and Pittsburgh Steelers held true last week. The New York Giants and Miami Dolphins proved disappointing. The Giants completely tanked and will miss the playoffs. I went 3-2 for the week. The season mark runs to 44-34. Selections for Week 17 are based on games in which both teams have something to play for (as best we can assess).

True Predictions: Holiday Express, Holiday Elimination Version

My goal is to hit the .600-.660 mark with the predictions this season, but it’s going to be tough. I went 3-3 last week. The season record is at 41-32 (just a bit below .570). To the Express!

True Predictions: Colts Will Lose, Saints Will Win and Home Sweet Home
Posted by Frank Nevarez Categories: Editorial, NFL,
Last week’s 2-3 record places the season mark at 38-29. I need some wins and let’s hope that some home-cooking will be the recipe for success this week. We’ve got six games picked and I’m going with the home team for all. Last week the Indianapolis Colts and San Diego Chargers took expected victories, but in statement games I was off the mark as the Philadelphia Eagles and Minnesota Vikings got it done over the New York Giants and the Cincinnati Bengals, respectively. The Miami Dolphins kept their wild card hopes alive by knocking off the Jacksonville Jaguars, who currently hold a wild card spot.

True Predictions: Bengals, Kurt Warner, and the Underachievement Bowl
Posted by Frank Nevarez Categories: Editorial, NFL,
Ouch, I go 1-4 this past weekend. Here are my excuses…I mean, reasons. A) I guess I can’t trust Bill Belichick as the New England Patriots lost to the Miami Dolphins, B) I should have known I couldn’t trust Wade Phillips and Tony Romo as the Dallas Cowboys lost to the New York Giants, C) I have to claim Thanksgiving turkey withdrawal for going with a Matt Ryan-less Atlanta Falcons over the Philadelphia Eagles (but was it visions of Xmas Past with Michael Vick?), D) Kurt Warner manned-up and the Arizona Cardinals are making the chase for the NFC crown a three-horse race. Only the Indianapolis Colts rang true and beat the Tennessee Titans. The season record runs to 36-26.

True Predictions: So Much Good & Bad, Titans, and Patriots vs. Saints on MNF

Week Eleven proved profitable for me as I went 5-1 and run the season record to 32-20. Two upsets: Oakland Raiders over the Cincinnati Bengals and Kansas City Chiefs over the Pittsburgh Steelers weren’t even selected to predict since I figured the also-rans would have no shot. But I did have the feeling that the one-win wonders, the Cleveland Browns and the Detroit Lions, would deliver a close contest. A last second pass interference call in the end zone set up the Detroit victory. I got the expected wins by the Green Bay Packers, New York Giants, Indianapolis Colts and San Diego Chargers. My lone loss was due to Vince Young leading the Tennessee Titans to their fourth straight victory in a hard-fought match-up with the Houston Texans. The Texans needed to show they could be contenders (against a 3-6 team), but it just was not to be.

True Predictions: the Belichick Decision, the Turner Factor, and the Colts Going 10-0
Posted by Frank Nevarez Categories: Editorial, NFL,
Many thanks to Bill Belichick whose much-discussed fourth quarter decision against the Indianapolis Colts put the clincher on another 3-2 weekend for me. My season record now runs to 27-19. Belichick has earned the right to make the call he did, but he obviously liked his offense’s chances of getting two yards a lot better than thinking that Indy could be held back. The Cincinnati Bengals pulled the minor upset over the Pittsburgh Steelers. Maurice Jones-Drew went all-universe in the Jacksonville Jaguars’ win over the New York Jets. The Arizona Cardinals and San Diego Chargers took expected victories.

True Predictions: Vince Young Watch, San Diego Rising, Steelers Rolling and Patriots vs. Colts

Each week I try to pick the weekend’s most competitive games. Each week I seem to go 3-2. Last week was no different. I am now 24-17 for the season. Philadelphia Eagles fans can tell me just how short Donovan McNabb came up last weekend against the Dallas Cowboys. I thought Norv Turner’s decision-making would cost the San Diego Chargers against the New York Giants. Little did I know it would be Tom Coughlin’s choices that would cost the home team. The Pittsburgh Steelers came through on the road against the back-to-earth Denver Broncos.

True Predictions: Favre, Ravens, Steelers vs. Broncos on MNF

Last week I got the Big Game right (Brett Favre and the Minnesota Vikings over the Green Bay Packers) and I got the Big Upset right (Baltimore Ravens over the Denver Broncos). But, after losing at home to the Miami Dolphins the New York Jets of 2009 are now hard-set into being the Jets of 2008 (very average). Yes, the New York Giants now have lost three in a row. But, as I wrote last week, don’t think Donovan McNabb’s winning performance against them is a permanent thing. He’ll let you down come playoff time (probably well before then). I go 3-2 last weekend for a 21-15 season record.
