Los Angeles Angels and Texas Rangers push for postseason

Jered WeaverThe Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim have been a playoff contender for years, and after missing the postseason last year, they’re back in the mix in 2011, trailing the Texas Rangers by four games in the AL West with 41 games left on the schedule, 10 of which are against those same boys from Arlington. They’ll play a four-game series this week and then a three-gamer on the last weekend of the month. Then, and we can only hope the division is still to be decided, the two teams will close out the season with three more games against each other.

Chad CorderoA lot has been made of the Toronto Blue Jays’ closer situation this offseason, from losing Kevin Gregg, potential ninth-inning man Scott Downs and one-time 30-save guy Jeremy Accardo to reaching a deal with Toronto main-stay Jason Frasor to the acquisitions of Frank Francisco, Octavio Dotel and Jon Rauch. That’s a lot of star power both leaving and entering Toronto’s bullpen. But what few have been talking about is another pick up in former Washington Nationals closer Chad Cordero.

Scott Downs, Halos reach three-year deal

Scott DownsIf you haven’t heard of Scott Downs, you’re not the only one. But you will. The 34-year-old left-handed reliever just reached a deal with the Los Angeles Angels, agreeing to a three-year, $15 million contract that will see Downs ship out of Canada for the first time since 2000. Downs made his MLB debut with the Cubs, but joined the Expos partway through the season, then moved to Toronto in 2005 and has been there ever since.
