As pitching becomes more and more specialized, we’re gradually seeing a decline in the number of wins and losses they’ll rack up over the course of a career. We’ll never see another 400 or 500 game winner, and even 300 game winners will become scarce. But what story does a won-lost record really tell? It certainly doesn’t indicate how well a pitcher performed. Just ask Ricky Romero, who is currently 5-6 for the Toronto Blue Jays.

Picked to finish in the mid-80s in wins by many experts, the Milwaukee Brewers got off to a rough start, losing their first four in a row, including the season opener by way of a walk-off home run. They’re playing under-.500 so far and have already put themselves in a hole. While the season is still young, there are already a few disappointments making this difficult for the Brew Crew. First of all, Zack Greinke has yet to make an appearance (and likely won’t until May) and secondly, Shaun Marcum has been anything but Marcum-esque.

Marcum tasked with replacing Halladay

It was the audition that was Shaun Marcum’s to lose. Toronto’s new No. 1 pitcher is far from an ace, but to ask him to fill the shoes vacated by former Jays star Roy Halladay is asking far too much. Marcum came into training camp expected to be at the top of Toronto’s rotation, and so far he’s not disappointed the masses with his solid outings, and has been rewarded with the first Opening Day assignment of his career.
