Hossa finally finds the holy grail

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, Championship, NHL,

Marian HossaThe third time was a charm for Marion Hossa, who, after three straight appearances in the Stanley Cup Final, finally got to hoist the shining silver mug. Hossa’s Penguins fell four games to two in the 2008 Finals. In the offseason, Hossa jumped ship to champion Detroit and hoped for a repeat, but his new Red Wing brethren came up one game (and one goal) short of this feat. They lost, of course, to Hossa former allies from Pittsburgh.

49-year drought just days away from ending

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Championship, NHL, Playoffs,

Dustin ByfuglienChicago finally applied the strategy everybody knew would work: stop Chris Pronger, win the game. In that order. Pronger was an uncharacteristic minus-five in a 7-4 Chicago win in Game 5. The Blackhawks are now one victory away from ending their reign as the team with the longest streak without having won a Stanley Cup. 1961 feels a lot longer ago than 49 years for many fans in the Windy City, and they may only have wait as few as two more days to bring the Cup back home.

Lidstrom to contemplate retirement

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, NHL, Rumors,

Nicklas LidstromAfter 19 years in Detroit, is Nicklas Lidstrom finally ready to call it a career? With the Red Wings’ elimination from the playoffs on Saturday night, another season came to a close for the Swedish defenseman, and at 40 year old, some are wondering if there’s anything left in the tank for the All-Star blue-liner. Should he ride off into the sunset after a disappointing second-round exit, or should extend him career for one more year to try to lead the Wings and prove their dynasty is not dead?

Playoff ride not short on stories

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: NHL, Playoffs,

Travis Moen & Martin SkoulaVancouver lays an egg and Philadelphia survives to battle another game. Pittsburgh squeezes a win out of Montreal and San Jose ousts Detroit in five games. It’s just more of the same incredible stories in these NHL playoffs. Regardless of who has been playing on any given night, this playoff season has not been short on storylines. As the second round of the postseason winds down, it’s easy to forget that there’s still a full two series left to play.

Penguins struggle to steal win from Leafs

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: NHL, Playoffs,

Crosby & MalkinIt took the defending Stanley Cup champions to bring the Leafs down. Toronto is playing way out of its league this month, having taken nine of their last 13 games, and they’ve been doing it competitively. Eight of their nine wins have come either in overtime or a shootout. The only other was a 6-4 win against last-place Edmonton. Sunday evening’s 5-4 shootout loss to Pittsburgh is the latest sign that while 2009-10 is a write-off for the lackluster Leafs, some minor offseason tweaks and improvements might bode well for Toronto, and poorly for the rest of the league.

Ducks struggle while Perry flies

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, NHL, Playoffs,

Corey PerryWhat do you get when you mix raw talent with good timing? The answer is Anaheim Ducks right winger Corey Perry. The 24-year-old Ontario native has been with the Ducks for five seasons now and has enjoyed relative success throughout much of his career but has flown under the radar with his team due to consistently good play. As they say, ‘where there’s smoke, there’s fire’, and until the 2009-10 season, there’s been clear skies in Anaheim.

The history of the NHL: The Expansion Era

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, Editorial, NHL,

Wayne GretzkyThe history of the NHL spans almost 100 years, and to make things easier, it has been broken in down into several eras. The third era is commonly referred to as the “Expansion Era”, taking place from 1967-1992, when the NHL doubled in size by adding six new franchises to the Original Six to create a more competitive league and grew to allow more teams into the playoffs, and more seven-game series. Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and St. Louis still operate where they were, the Minnesota North Stars moved to Dallas where they now play, and the California Seals ceased operations in 1978 after merging with the aforementioned North Stars.

The unknown Norris has done more than you think

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, Editorial, Front Office, NFL,

Marguerite Norris/Stanley CupThe NHL is a man’s league. It’s hard to argue that point. If you were asked to name two female NHL players ever, you wouldn’t be able to do it, because there’s only been one, Manon Rheaume, and even that was a pre-season publicity stunt that the Tampa Bay Lightning pulled off for publicity. However, hockey has had its share of women behind the scenes, perhaps none of which are more noteworthy than former president of the Detroit Red Wings, Marguerite Norris.

Fedorov back in North America for swan song

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, Editorial, NHL, Olympics,

Sergei FedorovThe men’s hockey teams are through with their initial practices and are ready for the most anticipated event at the Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver. With 12 nations competing in the tournament, all of them have some sort of experience on the smaller “North American” ice surface. While Canada (and by extension, the US) have a distinct advantage, there are many international players who are more accustomed to the small rink size than others. One of those is certainly a legend on the Russian team, former NHLer Sergei Fedorov.

Oilers stop slide, finally

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Drafts, Editorial, NHL,

Shawn HorcoffPlan the parade route! The Edmonton Oilers are undefeated in February! Too bad for them that they went winless in January. They picked up two points in overtime losses thanks to the NHL’s generous point structure. A 13-game losing streak dropped the Oilers far out of contention and into the basement in the Western Conference. Part of their losses included a pair to the Calgary Flames who, for the first time in history, swept the season series in the Battle of Alberta by easily taking all six games. To say things have never looked bleaker for Edmonton may be an understatement.
