Tampa Bay Rays recall Brandon Guyer to replace Upton or Niemann

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, Injuries, MLB,

The ever-creative Tampa Bay Rays are preparing for the worst. Early on Friday they played right-handed starter Jeff Niemann on the disabled list, leaving a vacancy in the starting rotation, and to replace him, they’ve called up Brandon Guyer from Triple-A Durham. As an outfielder, Guyer won’t be making any starts on the mound. Instead, he’s there to provide insurance in case center fielder B.J. Upton winds up being suspended by the league for a tantrum he threw in Wednesday’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays.

Matt Cooke suspended 10 games plus playoffs

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, Injuries, NHL, Playoffs,

Matt CookeMatt Cooke is relentless. He seems to have a vampiric lust for brains and will stop at nothing to see them oozing out of his opponent’s ears after delivering a vicious head shot. His latest infraction came on Sunday when he laid out New York Rangers defenseman Ryan McDonagh with his elbow, effectively challenging NHL disciplinarian Colin Campbell to either start a new chapter in punishment for the kind of hits nobody wants to see, or let history repeat itself by doling out a meaningless penalty.

Lee’s loss won’t impact a thing

Cliff LeeThe Seattle Mariners’ fans are going to have to wait an extra few days before they can meet their newest star in Cliff Lee. In case you hadn’t heard, Lee has been suspended for the first five games on the upcoming season for an incident that occurred last Monday in a Spring Training game against the Arizona Diamondbacks. An errant pitch from Lee soared above D’Backs catcher Chris Snyder’s head, and a bench-clearing scuffle followed before the dust settled.

Debating the head shots yet again

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, Front Office, Injuries, NHL,

Matt CookeThey’re talking about it again. Coming off the heels of Matt Cooke’s concussion-inducing headshot to Boston’s Marc Savard. Savard left the arena on a stretcher, Cooke didn’t even spend a second in the penalty box. It’s unknown if Savard will play again this season. As for Cooke, based on recent suspensions, he may be back with Pittsburgh before the playoffs. Since the Penguins don’t play again until Thursday night, director of hockey operations Colin Campbell is taking his time deciding Cooke’s punishment.

Washington’s Mike Green suspended 3 games for headshot

Mike GreenOn Saturday afternoon, the National Hockey League announced that Washington Capitals defenseman Mike Green has been suspended three games for an elbow he gave to Florida Panthers forward Michael Frolik during the first period of a game on Jan. 29. Frolik was fine and Green was assessed a minor penalty for elbowing, but the ramifications of this type of incident are huge in the hockey world and are one of the prime items on the agenda - player safety.

Ovechkin’s suspension negated by injury

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, Editorial, Front Office, NHL,

Alex OvechkinAlexander Ovechkin is injured. And suspended. On Dec. 1 against the Hurricanes, Ovechkin was the perpetrator in a knee-on-knee hit against defenseman Tim Gleason and was assessed a two-game suspension by the NHL for it. The unexpected consequence of the hit was that Ovechkin injured himself and had to leave the game. He also missed Wednesday night’s game against the Florida Panthers. The Capitals haven’t had to do anything to make the best of a bad situation. The National Hockey League did it for them.

I’d Much Rather Have Donte Stallworth In The NFL Than Michael Vick

Donte Stallworth

Cleveland Browns WR Donte Stallworth was suspended indefinitely by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell pending a meeting between the commissioner and Stallworth’s representatives.  Stallworth pleaded guilty to a DUI manslaughter charge for killing Mario Reyes on March 14 after a night of drinking in Miami Beach, FL.  Stallworth has started serving a 30-day sentence in jail, which will be followed by two years of house arrest, provisions for which Stallworth will be allowed to play football, and then eight years of probation.

Considering the indefinite suspension leveled on former NFL superstar QB Michael Vick for dogfighting and killing dogs, Goodell had to come down harshly on Stallworth who actually took a human life, however, by accident.  Stallworth acted stupidly and he knew it and knows it now.  There has been nothing but remorse on Stallworth’s part, even agreeing quickly with the deceased’s family on financial compensation, although, all the money in the world cannot replace Mr. Reyes.  From the beginning, Stallworth has been cooperative with law enforcement.  On the other hand, Vick tried to keep his illegal doings on the down low and has shown remorse only insomuch as to be able to get back on the football field.

Yes, what Stallworth did was incredibly stupid, incredibly dumb, and incredibly irresponsible.  However, there was no maliciousness in his action (and I pray for Mr. Reyes’ family), however, you cannot say the same for Vick.  I’m hoping Goodell allows Stallworth to take the field a lot sooner than he does Vick because despite being a Vick fan before all of this dogfighting mess and still believing he has useful talent in the tank left, I wouldn’t miss having an NFL without Michael Vick.  It’s been just fine without him.  What the NFL needs are more Stallworths that take responsibility for their actions no matter how stupid they were.

Proctor Suspended For Four Games

Posted by Milo Taibi Categories: Athletes, MLB, News,

Yuniesky Betancourt is not happy
On Monday New York Yankees relief pitcher Scott Proctor was suspended for four games for throwing behind Seattle Mariner Yuniesky Betancourt on Sunday. Both benches ran onto the field, as did the Yankees bullpen. No actual fighting occurred besides verbally. When Betancourt pointed his bat at Proctor following the pitch, Proctor gestured for Betancourt to charge the mound. This occurred after Yankees first baseman Josh Phelps needlessly plowed over Mariner catcher Kenji Johjima, and after Mariner pitcher Jarrod Washburn hit Phelps in the back with a pitch as retaliation.
