Rocket Richard race rides on

Sidney CrosbyThe goal-scoring race is at its peak. Sidney Crosby’s 49 goals has him in a slim one goal lead over two-time defending award winner Alex Ovechkin and Tampa’s young phenom Steven Stamkos. All three have two games left to play. Stamkos has scored almost a quarter of Tampa Bay’s goals and that lack of scoring help has lead Tampa to finish outside of the playoffs. Meanwhile, a spread out attack from the other two clubs has each preparing for the postseason, but it’s been these three individuals who have stolen the spotlight this season.

Stamkos is just as good as the best

Steven StamkosSteven Stamkos is on a mission. That mission is to help the Tampa Bay Lightning get a playoff spot. If he happens to win the goal-scoring title along the way, great. Stamkos scored twice against Boston on Thursday night in a 5-3 Lightning win and tied himself with two of the greatest names in hockey, Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin, for first on the goal-scoring list. The three are competing for the Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy, which is awarded to the top goal scorer in the NHL; an honor that Ovechkin has won for the last two seasons.

Leafs rising from the depths of the east

Vesa ToskalaThe time of the Maple Leafs is now. Toronto is arguably the hottest team in the Eastern Conference, and with some aggressive offensive play from youngster Phil Kessel and sorely missed quality goaltending from primary net-minder Vesa Toskala, the Leafs are quickly turning an abysmal 1-7-5 start into something salvageable by New Years, and beyond that, who knows? The upcoming problem for the Leafs though – as if they didn’t have enough – is that their January schedule looks about as rough as their October ended up being.

Overtime points are ruining the NHL

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: NHL,

Milan MichalekGoing into Saturday’s NHL games, the standings were what they were thanks in large part to the overtime and shootout loss points given to teams, which are basically the equivalent of the “participant” medal you got as a kid to not make you run home crying after getting last place in the school race. These points are ridiculous. A team wins a game and gets two points, but when a team loses after regulation play, they get a pity-point and make it difficult for those actually winning the games to rise in the standings. The Tampa Bay Lightning, with 31 overall points, have nine overtime/shootout points. Almost a third of their points have come in games in which they were the losing team. But what happens if you remove these “thanks for showing up” points from the equation?

Manon Rheaume, where are you now?

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, Editorial, NHL,

Manon RheaumeOn September 23, 1992, history was made in the National Hockey League. It was not the kind of history that one typically cares to remember, but it makes a great question in Trivial Pursuit. The Tampa Bay Lightning – then an expansion team trying to make a name for itself – dressed and played the first female player in the NHL. Manon Rheaume played one period as goaltender of the Lightning against the St. Louis Blues. She faced nine shots, letting two of them past her. While it was only an exhibition game, the publicity around the event expectedly rocked the sports world – which is exactly what the Lightning hoped for.
