The Rookie of the Year Award is not one of baseball’s most coveted honors. Those who win it sometimes do so because they are the “real deal,” and sometimes out of sheer luck and are “figured out” the next season. Nevertheless, it’s the RoY race is always as exciting as the playoff and MVP races, and this year’s crop of American League freshmen have put on quite a show. With less than three weeks left to play, deciding the winner may come down to who can end the year as hot as they started it.

The Toronto Blue Jays and the Tampa Bay Rays both play in the American League East. The two also have names three words long with rhyming mascots, but beyond that, few similarities exist between the two franchises. Both have battled the best in the AL East, competing with the juggernauts from New York and Boston, but up until the 2008 season, there was little about the Rays and Jays for fans outside of Tampa Bay and Toronto take note of.

The Dog Days of September In MLB

If the playoffs were to begin tomorrow, the eight teams that will have earned the postseason berths would make for some interesting divisional series. The Dog Days of August seem to have carried over into September for baseball’s leaders as half of them seem to have hit a wall. Of all the playoff leaders, only the Minnesota Twins have a current winning streak of more than a single game. For the final three weeks of the season, teams are putting a lot of extra pressure on themselves right now.

One of the biggest reasons for the Tampa Bay Rays’ emergence as an American League powerhouse has been Carl Crawford. The 1999 second round pick has grown up and become a premier major league left fielder, but when his 2010 season comes to an end, so will his contract and likely his time in St. Petersburg. Crawford will be a free agent this winter and will entertain offers from most of the teams in the league.

The Tampa Bay Rays pitching is driving the ship

The Tampa Bay Rays are picking a poor time to go through a team-wide slump. After a 17-11 thrashing from the Blue Jays on Saturday afternoon, the Rays have now lost four in a row; the longest losing skid of the season for the American Wild Card leaders. Despite the 17-run outburst, the Rays have some of the best pitching in baseball. The night before they lost 2-1, but both were unearned; just the second time in club history they have lost without giving up an earned run.

Just three years ago, the Tampa Bay Rays were the laughing stock of the American League. With a World Series appearance in 2008, they served notice that the kids were finally ready to compete with the Yankees and the Red Sox, leapfrogging in talent over Baltimore and Toronto. While not exactly baseball’s biggest stage, the Rays served notice again that their system is still full of talent when they brought up pitcher Jeremy Hellickson to make a start against the Minnesota Twins on Monday night.

Matt Garza continues the Year of the Pitcher with a no-hitter

When the media dubbed 2010 “The Year of the Pitcher,” they weren’t kidding. Tampa Bay’s Matt Garza continued the spectacular season for hurlers on Monday night by throwing the fifth no-hitter of the year. Garza joined Ubaldo Jimenez and Edwin Jackson in mere no hitters, as well as Dallas Braden and Roy Halladay who have both been perfect this season. Throw in Armando Galarraga’s 28-out not-quite-perfect game and you have one heck of a season, and it’s still July.

Rays not doing so well off the field

The Tampa Bay Rays may be at risk of changing their name again, but this time it might not be as simple as dropping a word. Rays owner Stu Sternberg has announced that he’s considering selling the franchise, and he’s not sure that any local buyers would be interested. He also more than implied that a potential buyer may do so with the intention of moving the team. Baseball’s greatest Cinderella-team of the last few years is now facing its latest challenge, and it may be one that it can’t win.

Dominating division putting others to shame

Has anybody else noticed that four of the five best records in the American League belong to teams from the East? The Rays and Yankees are one, two, split up only by Minnesota, who is a half-game ahead of both Boston and Toronto. Behind them is the AL West-leading Texas Rangers, who are two games back of them. From the Rays to the Jays, there is a 3.5 game gap, and there’s still two-thirds of the season left to play.

Woes for the O’s

Who needed a day off more than the Baltimore Orioles? Perhaps the rest of baseball. MLB’s worst team by record sat Monday after being swept for the second time this season by the Toronto Blue Jays, the team who many thought would finish behind the O’s in the standings for the first time since 2004. Instead two months into the season, the Jays are 14.5 games ahead. It’s not looking too good for the fortune-telling community.
