True Predictions: the Belichick Decision, the Turner Factor, and the Colts Going 10-0

Posted by Frank Nevarez Categories: Editorial, NFL

Description Many thanks to Bill Belichick whose much-discussed fourth quarter decision against the Indianapolis Colts put the clincher on another 3-2 weekend for me. My season record now runs to 27-19. Belichick has earned the right to make the call he did, but he obviously liked his offense’s chances of getting two yards a lot better than thinking that Indy could be held back. The Cincinnati Bengals pulled the minor upset over the Pittsburgh Steelers. Maurice Jones-Drew went all-universe in the Jacksonville Jaguars’ win over the New York Jets. The Arizona Cardinals and San Diego Chargers took expected victories.

True Predictions: Vince Young Watch, San Diego Rising, Steelers Rolling and Patriots vs. Colts

Posted by Frank Nevarez Categories: Editorial, NFL

Description Each week I try to pick the weekend’s most competitive games. Each week I seem to go 3-2. Last week was no different. I am now 24-17 for the season. Philadelphia Eagles fans can tell me just how short Donovan McNabb came up last weekend against the Dallas Cowboys. I thought Norv Turner’s decision-making would cost the San Diego Chargers against the New York Giants. Little did I know it would be Tom Coughlin’s choices that would cost the home team.  The Pittsburgh Steelers came through on the road against the back-to-earth Denver Broncos.

True Predictions: Vikings, Jets, Ravens, and Sea Monsters

Brett Favre

I went 4-2 this past weekend and 7-4 for the season. The Atlanta Falcons cannot make a statement and lose to the New England Patriots. You tell me if the San Francisco 49ers last second loss to Brett Favre and Minnesota Vikings equals “ugly” as I predicted. I think it counts more as “heart-breaking.” While it was a magical NFL moment to see Favre hoist that ball and to see Greg Lewis snatch it, I am of the mind that Favre will break down at some point during the season. I will either be right on this call or we may be seeing a John-Elway-like end to his career.

True Predictions: Jets, Patriots, Tony Romo, NFL in L.A.

Tony Romo

Last week I went 3–2 with my predictions: The New York Jets have arrived early for both me and the New England Patriots. The Manning Brothers, Eli and Peyton, proved true to the pedigree with both leading great fourth quarter drives (I didn’t pick the New York Giants, but did pick the Indianapolis Colts) for the win.The Chicago Bears beat the Pittsburgh Steelers on a fourth quarter victory drive; I figured they’d want/need this one more.  Yes, I predicted that the Baltimore Ravens would beat the San Diego Chargers. Gotta love Norv Turner’s decision-making. USC head coach Pete Carroll would love San Diego, wouldn’t he? And he’s seen the old Teflon take some hits at USC, right?

Former NFL Co-MVP Steve McNair Found Dead

Posted by Dennis Velasco Categories: News, NFL

Steve McNair

Steve McNair, former QB of the Tennessee Titans and Baltimore Ravens was found dead in a Nashville, TN condominium, along with a female, also found dead.  Early reports identified the woman as McNair’s wife, Mechelle, but have since been denied as such.  McNair was known for his hard-nosed approach to the game of football, playing many times through pain and still excelling, usually leading his team to victory.  McNair won the MVP with Peyton Manning during the 2003 season and led the Titans to the Super Bowl in 2000, only to lose to the St. Louis Rams 23-16, coming within a yard to send the game into overtime.  McNair was beloved by all his teammates, as well as his competition and will be sorely missed by his family, friends, and fans.

Vince Young of the Tennessee Titans

TENNESSEE TITANS
2007 RECORD: 10-6

Overview: Jeff Fisher is the most underrated head coach in the NFL. The fact that he took last year’s Tennessee Titans to the playoffs despite having a horrible Vince Young at the helm, and without Albert Haynesworth for most of the year on defense was a minor miracle. Granted, had the Indianapolis Colts starters played the regular season finale, the Titans would have lost and the Cleveland Browns would have made the playoffs. The Titans’ two wins prior to playing the Colts JV team were against the New York Jets and Kansas City Chiefs.

Can Mario Williams help the Houston Texans look down on the AFC South

HOUSTON TEXANS
2007 RECORD: 8-8

Overview: The Houston Texans are coming off their best season ever, going 8-8 in 2007. Their early schedule was favorable and they came out of the first five games with a 3-2 record. Bad part about that was one of those losses was to the Atlanta Falcons. The last two Texan wins were against teams that were already in the playoffs as well, so in my estimation this team was 6-10 if it was 8-8. They were an improved team last year and should be better yet again. Too bad they don’t play in the NFC West.
