Since the MLB Players’ Strike of 1994 and the realignment of divisions to include the new wild card format, there have been thirty teams to compete in the World Series. Thirty teams in baseball; thirty teams in the World Series. A perfect world would have welcomed each team to the Fall Classic once, but we all know that’s not the case. Baseball is not that fair. To say that there has been uneven representation of the divisions throughout the years would be a huge understatement, as the level of parity in baseball is about as high as CC Sabathia’s batting average.

A Breath of Fresh Air for the AL Wild Card

Thank goodness. It’s about time somebody from outside the American League East was holding the AL Wild Card spot. And with a 4-3 win, the Texas Rangers took two out of three from the Boston Red Sox, who went into this weekend with the elusive fourth playoff position, just ahead of Texas and the Tampa Bay Rays. Since 2003, only one team outside of the AL East has won the Wild Card slot, the 2006 Detroit Tigers. The Red Sox themselves have won four of the last six, while the Yankees won one in 2007.

Rangers Shut Out Twins 1-0

Scott Baker did all that he could do for his team on Sunday, but the Minnesota Twins offense was simply not up to the task of Vincente Padilla and the Texas Rangers. Padilla, Eddie Guardado, and closer C.J Wilson combined for a nine inning shutout. The game’s sole run came in the 6th inning, when rookie catcher Taylor Teagarden hit a solo home run.
“What he did today is what he’s capable of,” Rangers skipper Ron Washington said of his starter Padilla. “It was encouraging for the team because we’ve been struggling to get some things going. He gave us all a shot in the arm.”
