The San Francisco Giants have been anything but worthy defenders of their World Series championship lately. They’ve lost more than they have won lately and have seen a somewhat comfortable lead in the NL West over the Arizona Diamondbacks shrink to a mere half game. The latest insult came on Thursday night when Cliff Lee – who last pitched against the Giants as a member of the Texas Rangers in the Fall Classic – shut them down and kept them off the scoreboard, handing them their ninth loss in 14 games.

A month ago, Josh Hamilton was just returning from a rib cage injury that had sidelined him for the better part of September. That injury seems like ancient history to the Texas outfielder. Now, he’s expected to carry a Rangers offense through a powerful Giants pitching rotation that includes two-time National League Cy Young Award winner Tim Lincecum and fellow starter Matt Cain, while the bullpen crowd features Sergio Romo and Grizzly Adams-wannabe Brian Wilson.

After executing the same bit of managerial tactics that didn’t work for Joe Girardi, Charlie Manuel’s Phillies find themselves down 3-1 in their championship series against the Giants and are facing elimination. Manuel decided against using his ace Roy Halladay on short rest and opted for Joe Blanton. Despite Blanton exiting with a 4-3 lead, Manual did end up using starter Roy Oswalt in relief, who blew the lead and took the loss. Now the Phillies need to win three in a row to win their third-straight NL pennant.

Tim Lincecum starts fresh September with masterful performance

Tim Lincecum rebounded from an 0-5 August by pitching one of his best games of the season against the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday. Lincecum was masterful in leading his team to a tight, 2-1 victory to help improve their place in the standings, and he did so against one of 2010’s best starting pitchers, Ubaldo Jimenez. A pitchers duel unfolded at AT&T Park that ended with The Freak showing why he’s a two-time defending Cy Young Award winner.

Have you ever wondered why relief pitchers don’t win the Cy Young Award more often? We’re not talking about the guys who come in to clean up a mess when down by seven runs. We’re talking about the guys who come in the tough situations, whether it is a two-inning setup man with an ERA under 1.50 who keeps his team in the game, or the “lights out” closer who shuts the door 45 out of 50 times. These are the guys who deserve just as much recognition as a 20-game winner, but just aren’t taken as seriously.

Lincecum, Giants reach two-year deal

San Francisco Giants ace Tim Lincecum is staying put. The hurler came to a two-year agreement with the Giants and avoided salary arbitration with the club and will instead put his focus towards Spring Training and the 2010 Major League Baseball season. The anticipation of having Lincecum become available on the open market will cease as the ever-improving Giants hope to make a real push towards the postseason and potentially the World Series this year, lead by their young star pitcher.

Tim’s done it again. Tim Lincecum of the San Francisco Giants won his second consecutive National League Cy Young Award. Lincecum edged out the pair of St. Louis Cardinals aces, Adam Wainwright and Chris Carpenter. He becomes the first pitcher to repeat as the winner since Randy Johnson did so with the Diamondbacks four times from 1999-2002. It makes sense that the number one pitcher of 2008 won again, as while Lincecum’s wins total was down in 2009, he improved in almost every other area.
