The French Evolution

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: NHL, Playoffs,

Mike CammalleriWith yet another Game 7 road victory to clinch a series against one of the toughest teams in hockey, can anybody seriously stop these surging Habs? The one-time Cinderella Canadiens have now become the team to beat. Anything less than a Stanley Cup victory for Montreal may actually be seen as an upsetting finish now that they have brushed off both Ovechkin’s Capitals and Crosby’s Penguins. They’ll face either Philadelphia or Boston in the third round.

The great upsetters

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, NHL, Playoffs,

Jaroslav HalakCan you believe it? The unthinkable has happened! Goliath has been beaten by David again. That is, the Montreal Canadiens have ousted the Washington Capitals in the first round, and what’s worse is that not only was it a opening series upset, but it was also a President’s Trophy-winning team that fell to a lowly opponent that barely made their way into the postseason. Sure the series went the seven-game distance, but that’ll be no consolation to Washington fans.

Rocket Richard race rides on

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, NHL,

Sidney CrosbyThe goal-scoring race is at its peak. Sidney Crosby’s 49 goals has him in a slim one goal lead over two-time defending award winner Alex Ovechkin and Tampa’s young phenom Steven Stamkos. All three have two games left to play. Stamkos has scored almost a quarter of Tampa Bay’s goals and that lack of scoring help has lead Tampa to finish outside of the playoffs. Meanwhile, a spread out attack from the other two clubs has each preparing for the postseason, but it’s been these three individuals who have stolen the spotlight this season.

Eastern Conference race is polarizing…mostly

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: NHL, Playoffs,

Dave SteckelAs the NHL season winds down, the Eastern Conference is shaping up and teams are starting to separate in the standings. It seems that the more north you look, the stronger the teams generally are, with the exception of the first and last-place teams. Four out of five Northeast teams hold a playoff spot, while four out of five Southeast teams don’t. As it stands right now, it’s going to be awfully hard for anybody to swap tickets to the postseason.

Ovechkin gets boot for boarding penalty

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, NHL,

Alex OvechkinIt’s happened already. Less than a week after concerns about what would happen if a star NHL player were to be suspended for a dirty hit, Washington’s Alex Ovechkin – arguably the greatest player in the game, receives a major penalty and a game misconduct for hurling Chicago defenseman Brian Campbell into the boards in the first period of a Sunday afternoon game. Ovechkin now faces the possibility of supplemental discipline after further review of the incident by the league.

Washington doesn’t need a Winter Classic yet

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Editorial, NHL,

Fenway Park Winter ClassicRumors are popping up all over the place that Washington wants a piece of the NHL Winter Classic. Whether it be in Nationals Park or RFK Stadium, who cares? Just get Alex Ovechkin out their in the snow and the wind and let him do what he does best, all settled under the stars and stripes of the nation’s capital. Capitals extend franchise-record streak

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Editorial, NHL,

Alex OvechkinWhat’s worse than chasing a team who is in first place? Chasing them when they were in first before starting an 11-game winning streak. That’s the challenge facing everybody in the Eastern Conference not named the Washington Capitals. The Caps beat the Bruins on Tuesday 4-1, running their winning streak to a franchise-best 11 games, breaking a record set in 1984. They now have a 10-point lead over the second-place New Jersey Devils, and with the way things are going, you may as well hand them the Prince of Wales Trophy now.

Rask and Varlamov topping rookie lists

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, Editorial, NHL,

Tuukka RaskThe rookies in the NHL are making a huge impression on the fans nationwide. Everybody knows what John Tavares is doing for the Islanders as well as Niclas Bergfors in New Jersey, but there are two freshman goaltenders making a splash as well – Washington’s Semyon Varlamov and Boston’s Tuukka Rask. Both were first-round draft picks; Rask in 2005 and Varlamov in 2006, and both are dominating shooters across the league.

Ovechkin’s suspension negated by injury

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, Editorial, Front Office, NHL,

Alex OvechkinAlexander Ovechkin is injured. And suspended. On Dec. 1 against the Hurricanes, Ovechkin was the perpetrator in a knee-on-knee hit against defenseman Tim Gleason and was assessed a two-game suspension by the NHL for it. The unexpected consequence of the hit was that Ovechkin injured himself and had to leave the game. He also missed Wednesday night’s game against the Florida Panthers. The Capitals haven’t had to do anything to make the best of a bad situation. The National Hockey League did it for them.

NO-vechkin - Alex to miss two more games with injury

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, Editorial, NHL,

Alex OvechkinAlex Ovechkin will miss a pair of games against the Florida Panthers this weekend with an upper-body strain. The injury, which caused him to miss Wednesday’s 3-2 loss to the New Jersey Devils, has not yet healed enough for him to comfortably move around the ice, let alone throw his body around and weave in and out of defenders on his way to doing what he does best. So far, Ovechkin has 14 goals and nine assists in 14 games so far for the Capitals, and missing him for any length of time will only hurt the strong Washington offense.
