Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: NHL, Rumors,

Winnipeg JetsTo say the geographical situation in the NHL is less than desirable would be an understatement. With the move of the Atlanta Thrashers to Winnipeg (to play as the Winnipeg Jets) means that the Jets will have some of the most arduous travel schedule in history, but NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman thinks he has a solution to the problem, and he’ll spend the next two and a half months reviewing the situation.

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Front Office, News, NHL,

Jobing.com ArenaIt ain’t over yet. The Glendale City Council has voted in favor of paying the bills to keep the Phoenix Coyotes in Glendale, Arizona for yet another season. The Council’s 5-2 vote on Tuesday night means the city will pony up $25 million to the NHL that it pledged a year ago. That, by the way, is taxpayer money coming from citizens who have more than proven that for the most part, they are uninterested in the game on ice out in the desert.

Mario LemieuxOn Sunday, Mario Lemieux added his voice to the growing number of those who are seemingly upset with the current regime controlling the NHL. Whether you think it’s a problem that Lemieux is only publically coming out now that it’s his Penguins under attack or whether you think he’s a hypocrite in decrying the amount of NHL goonery going on while employing Matt Cooke is irrelevant. When Mario Lemieux speaks, everybody shut up and listen.

Lady Byng Memorial TrophyThe National Hockey League has recently been reported as considering renaming some of their award trophies. While the Stanley Cup is not in jeopardy, others are being considered due to the fact that many casual fans do not know the history behind the trophies or their namesakes. The original trophies and proposed renaming is as follows: The Hart (most valuable player) for Gordie Howe, the Art Ross (most points) for Wayne Gretzky, Calder (top rookie) for Mario Lemieux, James Norris (top defenceman) for Bobby Orr, Lady Byng (most gentlemanly player) for Jean Beliveau, and the Jack Adams (coach of the year) for Scotty Bowman. The reaction to the announcement has been great, and most of it is directed at NHL commissioner of 17 years, Gary Bettman.
