Early birds getting the worms

In the mayhem that is sure to come with the sheer volume of free agents available this winter, some teams have taken a proactive approach to filling holes and adjusting to new strategies. In an interesting “swap” between two AL Central teams – the Kansas City Royals and Chicago White Sox – each addressed a need regarding third base. Mark Teahen was traded by the Royals to Chicago on Nov. 6 for second baseman Chris Getz and corner infielder Josh Fields. Almost a week later on Nov. 12, the Royals signed former White Sox three-bagger Wilson Betemit to a minor-league contract.

The American League Cy Young Award winner was announced recently, and while an untraditional, yet unsurprising decision, Zack Greinke took home the hardware to cap off what has been an incredible season, taking home 25 out of 28 first-place votes. Greinke just completed his sixth big-league season – all with the Kansas City Royals – but made a name for himself in 2009. To go along with his Cy Young, he also made the AL All-Star Squad as more than just a pity-pick, led the league in ERA, and was also the players’ choice for Pitcher of the Year. Greinke topped the list, followed by the Seattle Mariners’ Felix Hernandez, Detroit Tigers’ Justin Verlander, and New York Yankees’ CC Sabathia.

Prior to the start of the 2008 season, Kansas City Royals manager Trey Hillman said to the media, “I do know this, you cannot win a championship without the expectation of winning it.” When at the time Hillman’s comment may have drawn more laughter than respect, his expectation doesn’t look quite so unrealistic now. His Royals swept the Detroit Tigers with a 4-1 victory on Thursday, thanks in part to home runs from Mark Teahen and Alex Gordon. The Royals’ starting pitcher, Zack Greinke, had a Brian Bannister-esque performance, going 7 innings giving up just 6 hits and 1 run, striking out 3. Recent Royals acquisition Ramon Ramirez held down the fort in the 8th inning en route to Joakim Soria’s 2nd save of the year in the 9th inning.
“Obviously, we’re very pleased by this—especially with our pitching,” Hillman said. “It’s nice to come in here and play this well against a team like that.”
